Stoke Travel Co. has announced that this summer they will be giving away free stays for anyone who brings their grandmother along on the trip. Stoke is giving away 2 night stays at selected festivals and trips to travellers who have sprightly Grannies that come along and don’t mind sleeping in a tent. Gran stays free too.
Guests for Stoke Travel trips are usually in the 18 to 40-year-old age group. Stoke, however, believes that youth is a state of mind and encourages anyone to come on their trips no matter their age. Lisa Parsons, previous festival manager for Stoke, commented, “We’ve had a few more elderly people on our trips in the past and they have had an absolute blast. My favourite was a 60-year-old couple at the wine fight. Younger people are really happy when older people party with them – the tipsy heart-to-hearts come with so much more wisdom”.
Stoke Travel acknowledges the fact that in travel, age often becomes null and void. There is a communal spirit amongst travellers and a general desire to see new places, try new things and meet new people. The usual societal constraints and boundaries blur and allow 21-year-old Gap Year youths to bond with 60-year-old retirees over shared experiences, mutual amazement (or lack thereof) at places and funny anecdotes.
Does Stoke really think this will open their target market up? Toby Paramor, CEO of Stoke Travel reckons not. “We don’t actually expect a large influx of senior citizens bopping away at our beach parties – although we have had a bunch before and it has been a riot. We’re just trying to demonstrate that we are an inclusive movement. Young and old, gay and straight, Trump supporters (or human beings) are all invited to contribute to this big ol’ continuous party.”
Guests have the choice of the following ‘Meet-us-there’ festivals and trips to which to bring Nan and stay for free: Springfest (Munich, Germany), San Vino (Haro, Spain), Running of the Bulls (Pamplona, Spain), Les Fetes de Bayonne (Bayonne, France), La Tomatina (Bunol, Spain), Ibiza Beach Camp (Ibiza, Spain), Van Surfari Spain & France, and Oktoberfest (Munich, Germany). All of these destinations provide camping accommodation in tents with mattresses and sleeping bags, most meals, massive parties, some transport, experienced guides, and unlimited beer and sangria.
