The Top 5 Places To Visit In Edinburgh

Edinburgh, located in the Central Belt region of Scotland, is the capital city of the country. Also known as “the Athens of the North,” Edinburgh is the throbbing night-life centre of Scotland.

This makes it a feast for both the mind and the senses, where you will find a great number of restaurants, shops and an unrivaled programme of city festivals all year around. Edinburgh is also home to some of the most fabulous attractions, from great theatres that offer splendid shows to the iconic Edinburgh Castle to outdoor activities and sports centres to Scotland’s National Museum and more. Although the average expenses of hotel accommodation in the city are a bit higher than elsewhere in Scotland, but there are so many places to visit that it is totally worth it.

1. Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle, one of the most iconic visitor attractions in Scotland, sits at the top of the Royal Mile on its own volcanic rock. At this mighty edinburghfortification, which was once the favoured residence of the kings and queens of Scotland, there is much to admire and see. Make sure you keep an eye out for the Crown Room that is home to the Scottish Crown Jewels, the Royal Palace created in honour of James VI in 1617, and the Stone of Destiny where previous Monarchs of the country were crowned. If visit the castle at 1 p.m., you might even hear the One O’clock Gun being fired.

2. National Gallery of Modern Art

Anyone who is a modern art lover should definitely visit the two buildings of the National Gallery of Modern Art that are a pleasant and short walk from the city centre. Cubist and Expressionist paintings are included among the displays there, with Matisse’s and Picasso’s works as special highlights. You can also explore the delightful grounds while you are at the galleries where the art theme is continued into the great outdoors, which can be a joy in the autumn. There is also a remarkable café and a well-stocked shop in each gallery as well.

3. Rosslyn Chapel

Rosslyn Chapel is a late-Gothic, mysterious and richly decorated chapel that founded in 1446 and was even featured in the novel It is not surprising the Rosslyn Chapel intrigued the best-selling author. The outside of the chapel bristles with canopies, flying buttresses, gargoyles, pinnacles, whilst the foliage carving inside is particularly eye-catching. The chapel has also been nicknamed “a Bible in stone,” because of the symbolically rich and subtle figurative sculptures inside, with portrayals of the Dance of Death, the Seven Deadly Sins and the Seven Acts of Mercy. The Chapel has also been featured in works of Sir Walter Scott and William Wordsworth too.

4. National Museum of Scotland

After having been refurbished and reopened, now there are 36 galleries comprising of more than 20,000 exhibits within the revamped National Museum of Scotland. Astonishing and stunning exhibits from all over the world can be uncovered in the 16 new exhibition galleries inside the museum’s treasure house, with 80% of objects that have never been seen before. The Mammoths of the Ice Age, an interactive, family-friendly exhibition will be unveiled in 2014 at the National Museum of Scotland, allowing you to go millions of years back in time.

5. Comedy Clubs

During the festival, some of the top comedians in the world perform at The Stand Comedy Club, while a nightly array of established and new comedy talent is hosted the rest of the year. Another great comedy club is the Highlight in the Omni Centre where shows are offered every Friday and Saturday, where you can also enjoy a dance in the disco to best music after you have had enough of laughs.
