A comprehensive renovation of the 724 guest rooms at The Westin Kansas City at Crown Center was recently finished, the culmination of a 2.5-year process. Improvements include new furniture, artwork from Hallmark Original Photography and a RFID key system.

The renovation began in July of 2015 with a comprehensive strategic plan to determine scope and cost. Stella Abdoulin with SA deZign from Los Angeles was hired the same year to design the rooms, guided by the Marriott Design Requirements. Some of the Westin brand elements incorporated into the final design encompassed descriptors like “organic,” “nature” and “individuality.”

PGAV Architects from Kansas City served as the architect, providing all of the architectural drawings and coordinating the other consultants. BGR Consulting Engineers, a local engineering firm, provided the mechanical, electrical and plumbing drawings for the project. And JE Dunn, the largest general contractor in Kansas City, coordinated multiple subcontractors and created a complex schedule to complete 724 rooms in less than 4 months. The renovation took place over 110 work days with the average number of renovated rooms per day coming to 6.6. Over 30 contractors and subcontractors participated in the project.

“For 45 years The Westin Kansas City at Crown Center has been a fixture of downtown Kansas City,” said General Manager Jim Snow. “This renovation is an important component of not only maintaining our status as the ‘grand dame’ hotel of Kansas City, but raising the bar to the benefit of our guests.” Since the completion of the rooms this past March, The Westin Kansas City at Crown Center has risen to be in the top 25% of all Westin properties in South and North America for guest satisfaction.

The newly restored rooms feature the following upgrades:

  • New modern furniture
  • Stone desk tops and vanities
  • New carpet and doors
  • Wall treatments
  • Modern artwork
  • Upgraded lighting
  • Bedside reading lights
  • Heavenly® Bath
  • RFID key system
  • New hallway carpet
