The winners! Qantas Australian Tourism Awards

February 26, 2018 Headline News No Comments Email Email

Paul Hogan was named an Australian Tourism Legend – officially – at the 2017 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards on Friday, as hundreds of tourism industry notables gathered at Perth’s new Optus Stadium to learn which of 200 finalists had won awards across 25 categories.

Australia’s Tourism Minister, Steven Ciobo, said the awards had come at a time when Australian tourism continued to break records. More than eight million international visitors spent a record AUD 41.2 billion during the record 268 million nights they stayed in Australia in the year to September 2017.

The awards also followed the recent launch of the viral Crocodile Dundee tourism campaign, Ciobo said.

Australia’s tourism industry is critical to the nation’s economy with growth at record levels. Australian tourism is worth AUD 125 billion and directly employs almost 600,000 Australians. Every dollar spent in tourism generates 81 cents in other parts of the economy, higher than mining and agriculture.

It is also a crucial driver of growth in Australia’s regional centres, with 43 cents of every tourist dollar spent in regional Australia.
