While it’s well known as a popular place for party-goers, there’s more to Amsterdam than a trip through the Red Light District while under the influence. For the more discerning traveller, immerse yourself in authentic Dutch culture and discover what makes this stad (city) a true delight, thanks to Babbel, the shortest path to learning a new language.

VISIT THE RIJKSMUSEUM
Rijksmuseum or “The State Museum” in English, is the main national museum in the Netherlands. Be captivated by the artistic history that this must-visit location has to offer. From Rembrandt van Rijn’s Night Watch to Johannes Vermeer’s The Milkmaid, there is something to satisfy everyone’s inner kunstenaar (artist).

TAKE A CRUISE DOWN THE CANAL
What says Amsterdam more than a leisurely trip down the canal? Learn interesting facts about the city while taking in all the beautiful landmarks scattered throughout. A popular choice is one of the candlelit night time guided cruises with eten (food) and wijn (wine).

ACT LIKE A REAL DUTCH PERSON AND CYCLE
With more fietsen (bicycles) than there are people, hiring a bike is a super fun and affordable way to see the city. The flat landscape of Amsterdam and designated bike lanes make it one of the most cycle-friendly cities in the world, so why not try it for yourself?

VISIT THE ANNE FRANK HOUSE
If you are after a more historical experience, look no further than the Anne Frank house. It’s a sad and eerie journey back in time, on which you can see the kast (cupboard) that hid the Frank family during the Second World War. Due to its popularity, it is recommended to visit between 9am and 10am.

BUY TULIPS
They might be cliched but they are beautiful nonetheless and a definitive symbol of Dutch culture. It wouldn’t be a trip to the Netherlands without spotting these bloemen (flowers). Take a trip to the Bloemenmarkt and be amazed by the world’s only floating flower market.

SUBMERGE YOURSELF IN REAL VAN GOGHS
You shouldn’t visit Amsterdam without paying a visit to the one and only Vincent Van Gogh museum. Home to more than 1,000 schilderijen (paintings), hand written letters and sketches, visitors can get up close and personal with some of the most famous pieces of artistic work in the world.
