Think you know disruption – try 200 cancelled flights

July 24, 2014 Aviation, Headline News No Comments Email Email

egtmedia59If one flight delay is problematic – imagine 200.That was the case in China earlier this week, with hundreds of flights to and from the east of the country cancelled or delayed and state media warning that more disruptions may happen over the next few weeks.

About 200 flights were cancelled at Shanghai’s two airports, news source ABC17 reported.

The two airports, Pudong and Hongqiao, are among China’s busiest. Another 120 flights were delayed for more than two hours.

The problems didn’t end there. Flights from other eastern Chinese city airports, including Nanjing and Hangzhou, were similarly affected, reports indicate.

The question is, why?

Local officials referred to “air traffic restriction” while Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines mentioned congested airspace, according to the Shanghai Daily newspaper.

Some observers have noted that such problems strike when military manoeuvres are taking place.

Rather more disturbingly, a memo published on a Chinese flight crew blog says that China’s civil aviation authority has requested airlines to reduce flights by 25% in eastern China.

All kinds of rumours are circulating.
