Three Aussies plunge from hotel balcony in Phuket

egtmedia59Three Australian tourists fell simultaneously from a hotel room balcony in Phuket on Tuesday night while “drinking and fooling around”, according to a Phuket News report quoted by the Bangkok Post.

The three Australian men, who the story named, are all said to be aged about 24. One reportedly landed on his head and was placed on a respirator before being rushed to hospital. The other two got off more lightly, sustaining just minor injuries.

A staffer at the Phuket Graceland Resort and Spa, a four-star property on Thaweewong Road, Patong Beach, told Phuket News the three young men had been drinking on the third floor and were “teasing and pushing each other” before they plummeted together from the balcony.

Whether the balcony, or a railing, gave way was not reported. For three people to fall together seems unusual, though an investigating officer at Krathu police station was quoted as saying he “suspected that the three men were very drunk and overly playful”.

A hotel staff member told the Phuket News the men were “hanging out and drinking on the hotel balcony.

“They were chatting loudly and teasing each other, pushing each other around, when, unexpectedly, all three fell off the balcony to the courtyard.”

Police will question them after they recover, the report concluded on an optimistic note.

The safety of tourism in Thailand has been under scrutiny since a horrific murder on an idyllic Thai island last month in which two young British backpackers were hacked to death with a garden hoe. At least one of them was raped.

Nobody has yet been charged in that case and police seem no closer to catching the murderer than when the investigation began.

Misadventures, such as coming off rented motorbikes at night – or falling from balconies – are more common mishaps to befall young travellers on holiday.
