As travelers begin planning their wintertime tours of Tibet, many have questions and concerns regarding Tibet travel permits. As is the case when visiting Tibet any other time of the year, travel permits will still be required.

A registered travel agency will apply for the permits and help ensure that travelers make it into Tibet without any issues. To help travelers plan their trip, Lhasa based Tibet travel agency Tibet Ctrip Travel Service-TCTS ( provides details.

    •     After booking a tour, travelers will need to provide TCTS with a copy of their passport information page and Chinese visa; these gI_73760_Nepal-Tibet-traveldocuments are needed for the application process. If at the time of booking a group member has not yet obtained their passport or Chinese visa please be sure to send it along at least two weeks before the tour start date.
    •     A travel permit is kind of like a Tibet visa; it must be presented when boarding trains to Tibet or checking into flights to Tibet. Those arriving from Mainland China will need to supply an address for the permit to be mailed to; the best way to do this is to stay at least one night in China before coming to Tibet and have the permit mailed to the group’s hotel. If coming from Nepal travelers’ guide will meet them at the border or airport in Lhasa with the permit in hand. Permits cannot be mailed internationally.
  •     Now groups of any size can obtain a Tibet permit, even people travelling solo! However, travel groups with members of different nationalities cannot enter on the same permit. Certain travelers such as journalist, foreign diplomats, and military personnel may need special permission. TCTS will provide details about these restrictions while travelers plan their tour.

Obtaining a Tibet travel permit is a fairly straightforward process for travelers. All a travel group needs to do is provide copies of their passport and Chinese visas; TCTS takes care of the rest. If arriving from Mainland China it will also be necessary to provide an address for the permits to be mailed to, most travelers have them sent to a hotel. Please keep in mind that regulations are subject to change with no advanced notice; TCTS will help affected travelers adjust their travel plans. With winter right around the corner travelers are encouraged to start planning their adventure now.
