Sydney is once again set to host the largest rowing event in the country when the 2014 Sydney International Rowing Regatta (SIRR 2014) returns to the Sydney International Regatta Centre, Penrith (SIRC). The eight-day regatta will be held from Sunday 23 to Sunday 30 March 2014 and will feature a number of events including the World Rowing Cup #1.

2014 Sydney International Rowing RegattaAt a special event held in Sydney today, Minister for Tourism and Major Events, George Souris, joined Australia’s World Champion rowers, Kim Crow and Erik Horrie, Men’s Four London 2012 silver medallist, James Chapman, Junior World Champions, Gen Horton and Jess Allen, and John Boultbee, Chairman of SIRR 2014’s organising committee, to announce that event tickets were officially on sale via Ticketek.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events, George Souris, said, “I’m delighted that the 2014 Sydney International Rowing Regatta will return to Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith, an event which will see the World Rowing Cup 1, alongside the domestic events held at a world class sporting facility.

“It is a fantastic event for Western Sydney and highlights the NSW Government’s commitment to bringing major sporting events to Sydney and NSW. These events not only bring enjoyment and entertainment to people but also contribute to the economic well-being of the State.

“The NSW Government, through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW, is proud to support the Sydney International Rowing Regatta, the pinnacle event in Australian Rowing.”

Australia’s Kim Crow, the current Women’s Single Sculls World Champion, said that the event was going to showcase the very best in Australian rowing: “I’m really looking forward to competing at SIRR 2014, we had a great time last year at the regatta, there was good attendance and great atmosphere with so many school kids having a fantastic time.

“It’s just such a good opportunity for us to compete in front of a home crowd.

“I would encourage anybody and everybody to come down to have a look at the regatta. Rowing is a fun sport, there’s a good atmosphere around the regattas and there’s going to be some fantastic international competitors out racing, so it’s a good opportunity to come out and check out the sport and have a great day.”

Spectators at the event will be treated to a showcase of some of the best Australian rowing and para-rowing, while also being able to witness a selection of some of the world’s best rowers compete in the first round of the World Rowing Cup that is also a part of the event.

Crow’s team-mate Eric Horrie, who is a World Champion in para-rowing, added: “The event is going to be great with the Australian Open Rowing Championships, the Australian Open Schools Rowing Championship and the King’s and Queen’s Cups Interstate Regatta, along with the first round of the World Rowing Cup.

“There’s going to be something for everyone out in Penrith and I certainly can’t wait to compete.”

Finally, Chair of SIRR 2014, John Boultbee, added: “This is the second year of the Sydney International Rowing Regatta and athletes and spectators from across the country and world will descend upon Sydney for the event which will certainly provide a wonderful exhibition of some of the best rowing in the world. I’d like to also take this opportunity to thank the NSW Government, through Destination NSW, and Singapore Airlines for their continued support.

“I would recommend people purchase their tickets sooner rather than later to guarantee their place at the regatta and to avoid disappointment.”
