Tropical North Queensland has become the most awarded region in Queensland with 19 accolades at the 2015 Queensland Tourism Awards.

Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ) Chief Executive Officer Alex de Waal said the Tropical North Queensland region was awarded nine Gold, six Silver and two Bronze awards with two Hall of Fame inductees.

Tropical North Queensland’s nine gold winners include two Gold awards for Daintree Discovery Centre and fellow Gold recipients Cairns Convention Centre, Cairns Central YHA, Reef Magic Cruises, Ocean Safari, Seawalker @ Green Island, Cape Tribulation Beach House Resort, and Tjapukai Indigenous Experience.

Hall of Fame inductees also include Tropical North Queensland’s Cairns Convention Centre (Business Event Venues) and Cairns Central YHA (Backpacker Accommodation). These operators have won Gold in their selected categories for three consecutive years.

Mr de Waal said Tropical North Queensland had outstanding products delivering extraordinary experiences and TTNQ wanted the world to know about them.

“TTNQ changed focus this year by moving away from our local awards to a program aimed at fostering excellence in our industry,” he said.

“This included the highly successful News Corp Australia Tourism Innovation Conference this month and an awards mentoring process to assist members write the best submission possible for the Queensland and Australian Tourism Awards.

“Workshops with former awards judges were held for TTNQ members to discuss how they should answer award questions, mentors gave feedback on draft submissions and then conducted one-on-one mentoring to finetune submissions.

“As a result two-thirds of the Tropical North Queensland operators entered in the Queensland Tourism Awards received an award.

“The results are outstanding and a clear vindication of TTNQ’s efforts in helping our industry communicate the excellence that exists in our region 365 days a year.

“We have so many more deserving members who did not enter the awards and I look forward to them taking advantage of our program of excellence next year.

“Our Queensland winners will now progress to the Australian Tourism Awards and I hope Tropical North Queensland will be appropriately recognised.”
