Set to be one of the most exciting openings of the year, TokyoLima comes to Hong Kong this January. The late-night destination is Hong Kong’s first to serve Nikkei cuisine in an atmosphere of a buzzing izakaya. TokyoLima brings a casual approach to Nikkei, Japanese inspired Peruvian cuisine, served in an environment that captures the essence of Japan’s famous drinking hangouts. Tucked away on Lyndhurst Terrace in the heart of Central, the new restaurant and bar is place where everyone feels welcome and hours can be spent soaking up great drinks, food and company.
Stepping into TokyoLima, guests are drawn in by an inviting electric atmosphere that feels far from the busy streets of Central. With hidden nooks, eclectic vintage furniture and soft-draping fabrics TokyoLima invites a sense of mystery in a space that feels intimate and familiar. Guests can peruse the extensive sake menu and sip on cocktails at the terracotta-tiled bar, or wander through to the restaurant for Nikkei plates at the open kitchen counter or on comfortable aged-leather sofas.
Peruvian Chef Arturo Melendez heads the kitchen and brings his creative expression of Nikkei cuisine in a menu that marries the passionate heat of Peru with the clean freshness of Japan. Small to large plates perfect for sharing feature an abundance of fresh seafood, a combination of interesting textures and ingredients such as Peruvian aji amarillo chili, passion fruit Tiger’s Milk, pickled kiuri and citrus shoyu.
Crafted by Mixologist Isabella Vannoni, the heart of the drinks menu is the approachable sake list which is designed to put the fun back into drinking the Japan’s national spirit. Unpretentious cocktails draw from a Nikkei approach of combining daring ingredients and intriguing flavours in exact balance.
ToykoLima is the third restaurant opened by restaurateurs Manuel Palacio and Christian Talpo of Pirata Group, the creative brains behind Hong Kong’s Pirata and The Optimist. With a unique vision and an infectious energy, the pair is driven by a passion to bring exceptional experiences to Hong Kong’s dining scene at honest prices. For Manuel and Christian, opening a space inspired by Japan’s izakaya culture made perfect sense.
“In an izakaya, anyone is welcome. From CEOs to groups of students, everyone is invited to drink, eat, relax and let loose under one roof. It’s a place which anyone can make their own. At TokyoLima, people can stop by through the night for a quick cocktail and bite to eat at the bar, a carafe of sake, or a long catch up with friends over a feast of Nikkei plates – each visit brings a different experience.” says Christian Talpo, TokyoLima Co-founder.
Bringing together different elements to meet in balanced harmony, TokyoLima is described best as unexpected yet comfortingly familiar.
