Tons Of Fun Expected At Top Resort’s 10-Year Party

A Danish chef with a Michelin track record and a South African singing act called “Three Tons of Fun” are being imported to Lombok in December to mark the 10-year anniversary of Qunci Villas and resort, which was named “Leading Resort Indonesia” at the recent 2013 World Travel Awards (WTA) held in Dubai.

Events planned for Dec. 6 include a dinner led by Martin Sorensen, a native of Denmark whose culinary journey includes Noma, a two-star Michelin restaurant in Copenhagen also on the Pellegrino’s list of top 50 restaurants in the world. Sorensen also headed kitchens in Germany, Abu Dhabi and the acclaimed Marque restaurant in Sydney.

52The following night Qunci officially celebrates its 10th birthday at a party in the resort’s hillside villas with entertainment headlined by Three Tons of Fun, a vocal trio from Cape Town so named for its extra large female performers. Qunci owner Scott Coffey says he has long wanted to bring the singers to the resort, having heard them in Cape Town on the same visit when he discovered the acclaimed ceramicist Hennie Meyer, who created the hotel’s permanent ceramic art installations.

Other highlights planned into 2014 include February’s ‘Month of Love’ campaign with weekly food and art events with guest chefs and artists from Java, Singapore and Perth.

Coffey says of the anniversary event: “The 10-year birthday marks a time for celebration yet there is plenty to look forward to the next 10 years and beyond.” Coffey, an American banker, believes Lombok has every opportunity to carve it’s own unique niche in Indonesia’s booming travel industry. With new direct flights now offered from Perth, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, Coffey says international visitors are opting to have a single experience of traveling to Lombok.

Asian travel experts see Qunci as a model for smart and sustainable tourism development. “Qunci has risen to the top through careful expansion and refinement,” said Eric Levy, Managing Director of Tourism Solutions International, a hospitality investment firm based in Singapore. “As a result, Qunci consistently wins outstanding online rankings as an example. There wouldn’t be another Indonesian property outside Bali generating such overwhelming and ongoing appeal, and with the recent WTA recognition announced just before Qunci’s decade anniversary, there’s plenty of reason for them to celebrate.”
