Top Occupations for Hopeful Migrants to Australia

UntitledMany people come to Australia for a short visit every year. Some stay for a year on a working holiday visa, or even two if they qualify.

However, there are a lot of people who would rather make a more permanent move to the country. There are skills shortages in many areas. And Australia is happy to welcome those with the skills to fill them. Specialisms from nursing to law need the right migrants to come and take up positions. Without them, the country will continue to be lacking in several areas. Potential migrants can consult the Skilled Occupation List or the Consolidated Sponsored Occupation List. The latter requires them to have sponsorship to work in the country. Below are some of the industries most in need of more workers.


Construction workers are needed in many parts of Australia. Of course, it’s the skilled workers who have a better chance of being granted a visa to stay in the country. Both construction project managers and project builders appear on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL). Other roles related to construction and building are also required, from architects to landscapers. Building homes and businesses is one of the most essential tasks for any society. Without an adequate number of people to carry out these tasks, other industries can slow down.  A lack of resources in construction could affect anything from tourism to education.


Engineers are also needed in a number of different fields. In fact, the SOL lists several types of engineer. The range from civil and chemical to industrial and electrical. Anyone with engineering skills would do well to consider a life in Australia. Like construction, engineering is essential to the advancement of many industries. They can be anything from transport to energy. An engineer could find themselves working in medicine, mining or agriculture. Anyone considering a career in engineering will be assessed by Engineering Australia. They are responsible for checking skills and qualifications for the industry.

Nursing and Care

Medical staff are needed in many areas, but nurses are one set of people who are in high demand. They are required to work in a number of specialisms, from aged care to paediatrics. All registered nurses must be assessed by the ANMAC. This is to check that their qualifications are suitable for working in Australia. There are also care jobs available to those who wish to care for the elderly or disabled. Potential applicants can find aged care jobs across the country, particularly if they are a registered nurse. Nurse practitioners are also needed, and so are midwives.

Other Medicine

There are other areas of medicine where they are experiencing a shortage. The SOL lists psychologists, neurologists and vascular surgeons, to name a few. The CSOL expands the occupations even further. It lists everything from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker to cardiologist. Any person who has medical qualifications could have a good chance of finding work. However, those with more experience and an in-demand specialism will have more luck.



Naval and Marine

One of the exciting areas where more skilled people are required is within the naval and marine industries. Persons who can work on ships, from engineers to officers, are listed on the SOL. Some roles are available within the Navy, however not all of them are. Others involve working on civilian ships instead. Even some slightly more unusual jobs appear, such as that of a naval architect. And on the CSOL, there is a slightly longer list, including ship’s surveyor. Marine jobs are available too, such as biologists and transport professionals. However, these roles require sponsors.

Education and Childcare

Even childcare has available jobs in the industry, including child care centre managers. This role proved particularly difficult to recruit for in 2014. So anyone with the requisite skills could find they have several options open to them. Many applicants lacked experience, so anyone with a good few years under their belt could do well. Early childhood teachers are in demand, and so are other types of educators. Secondary school teachers and special needs teachers are on the SOL. Specialist teachers are required, such as those for the hearing or visually impaired.

Social Work

Industries related to care are a common theme among those that have trouble recruiting the right people. Social work is another profession where Australia is in need of more people to fill roles. Social worker appears on both the SOL and CSOL. So interested people could apply for either visa. This vital role is in demand by employers, and may require registration. The skills and application are assessed by the AASW.


Lawyers are also in demand in Australia. Both barristers and solicitors appear on the SOL. Meanwhile, the CSOL lists legal executives and judiciary and other legal professionals. It isn’t one of the industries where there is most concern. But there is still demand for these roles across the country. They play vital parts in society. They ensure that people have an adequate defense when faced with criminal charges. Or they help people deal with any other legal issue. However, the industry may present a barrier. Applicants will need to be familiar with Australian law.

Agriculture and Environment

Agricultural and horticultural professions have appeared in the reports produced by the Australian government. Agricultural consultants and scientists are particularly in demand, with engineers also needed. The situation has improved in recent years. Although many applicants to these roles are unsuitable for the job. In 2007, only 69% of positions were filled by suitable candidates, whereas the number has risen to 91% in 2015. This perhaps shows that the drive to recruit skilled migrants is having a positive effect on the market.

Advertising the lists of occupations in demand by employers in Australia attracts migrants. This means that roles can be filled by hiring outside of the country when it’s not possible to do so in Australia. Many industries have seen improvements in hiring over the last few years, and will continue to do so.
