Tour bus flips and kills more than 30 people

Thirty-two people were killed and 13 others injured when their tour bus overturned on a curve in the road, creating an accident that saw 200 firefighters deployed to rescue survivors and a fleet of 20 ambulances standing by to whisk them to hospital.

Speed is one factor being investigated after the horrific smash near Taiwan’s capital, Taipei.

Local media said most of the passengers were elderly domestic tourists returning from a cherry blossom tour in Taichung. No foreign nationals were thought to be aboard.

The BBC pointed out that Taiwan is considered one of the safest places in the world – but critics say safety standards need to be improved.

In July, 26 people died after a tour bus in Taiwan’s Taoyuan city burst into flames. A suicidal driver is considered the likely cause.

Last year, Taiwanese airline TransAsia, founded in 1951, shut down following financial losses and six crashes in the past 20 years, four of which involved fatalities.

In 2015, a TransAsia flight crashed when one of its two engines malfunctioned and pilots mistakenly shut down the good engine, rather than the faulty one.
