With NSW’s tourism industry going from strength to strength, Minister for Tourism and Major Events, Adam Marshall, will spend time meeting with industry representatives at a forum hosted by the Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) in Sydney tomorrow.

“NSW is our number one state for export tourism and, with international visitation growing by around 10% annually, it is now contributing more than $9.8 billion to the local economy,” ATEC Managing Director, Peter Shelley said today.

“While NSW is a natural gateway for the inbound market, the Government has done a lot to recognise its competitive advantage and ensure it keeps delivering a high quality and exciting product for our international visitors.

“We are very pleased to see the NSW Government announced additional funding for Destination NSW in last week’s State Budget and welcome a range of funding that supports the local industry to thrive.

“While Australia is a highly competitive product in the international market, it is vital that we keep our destination fresh and exciting and investment in maintaining our tourist attractions is key to ongoing success.”

Mr Shelley said investments across the state would have a positive impact for both domestic and international tourism engagement including:

  • $29m for Aboriginal & Historic Heritage
  • $187m for Walsh Bay rejuvenation
  • $193m for Integrated tourism & events programs to grow NSW as a global tourism and event destination
  • $34m for infrastructure across national parks
  • $190m over 4 years for Opera House renewal program

“Tourism is a great investment for our economy and the NSW Government has clearly recognised the significant value it brings to the state by investing in destination marketing, major events and infrastructure programs.

“We look forward to hearing the Minister’s vision for the future of tourism in NSW and welcome his commitment to our industry.”
