Tourism support package arranged for fire-hit Tathra

Following devastating bushfires that seared the town of Tathra on the NSW Sapphire Coast earlier this month, the state has organised a Tathra and coastal region support package worth AUD 100,000, designed to assist the local tourism industry.

Tathra is heavily reliant on tourism and the fires destroyed 65 homes and damaged another 48 homes. Fortunately there was no loss of life.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the funding would go towards a range of marketing and publicity programs to help drive overnight visitation to the region.

“The Tathra bushfire has taken a heavy toll on the local community and my thoughts are with all those who have been affected,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“The NSW Government knows how valuable tourism is to the Sapphire Coast which is why we want to send a clear message to travellers that the region’s hotels, restaurants and local attractions are open for business and ready to give that warm welcome that the area is known for.”

The AUD 100,000 campaign will include breakfast television weather crosses from the region, extensive digital marketing and social media advertising and support for upcoming Sapphire Coast events.

NSW Member for Bega Andrew Constance said the campaign would help spread the word that the Tathra community is back on their feet – and grab the attention of thousands of travellers who are looking to book their next holiday or short-break.

“This support package will stimulate travel to this wonderful part of regional NSW while putting expenditure into the pocket of the local economy at this critical time,” Constance said.

“Whether it’s the beautiful beaches, national parks or the fresh local seafood, the Sapphire Coast really is a must-see destination and we look forward to welcoming more visitors to the region over the next few months as a result of this important NSW Government support.”

The Tathra and coastal region support campaign has been developed by the NSW Government’s tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW, in consultation with Destination Southern NSW and Sapphire Coast Tourism.
