Three of South Australia’s best tourism experiences have walked away with major prizes at the 2013 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in Sydney.

Two Barossa businesses, Tour Barossa, offering perfect touring solutions for visitors to the Barossa region was named Australia’s best tour & transport operator and Pindarie Cellar Door with its amazing views and meticulously restored historic buildings was named Australia’s best tourism winery.

Rodney Fox Shark Expeditions won the award for best new tourism development for its new Great White Adventure in Port Lincoln, giving tourists the opportunity to see sharks up close in their natural environment and offers seal swims, island tours and a research talk.

Eleven other South Australian tourism businesses were also awarded a record four silver medals and seven bronze medals recognising the amazing contribution they make to the State (see attached list).

South Australian Tourism Industry Council Chief Executive Ward Tilbrook says the Australian Tourism Awards finalists represent the best of the best from around the country.

“To be a finalist at the national level, entrants must first win a State tourism award in the same category, so our local finalists were up against some very tough competition,” Mr Tilbrook says.

“The Qantas Australian Tourism Awards are a whole-of-business award which recognises tourism businesses that strive for excellence in every area of their operation.

“This is a fantastic result for the State and is excellent recognition of the hard work and innovation of the people at the front line of our tourism industry. We should all be very proud of their achievements.

“These wins will not only raise South Australia’s profile in Australian tourism but also sets a benchmark for best practice.”

The awards were announced at a gala presentation and dinner at the Big Top in Sydney’s Luna Park, attended by over 900 of Australia’s key tourism operators and industry leaders.
