Tourist pistol-whipped in armed attack in New Zealand

egtmedia59Pistol-whip, a term originating in America in the 1940s, means to hit or beat (someone) with the butt of a pistol. The term is not usually associated with New Zealand but it was at the weekend, when Hawkes Bay Police arrested a woman on suspicion of being involved in an armed attack on two French tourists in a car park in the popular Art Deco city of Napier, one of the country’s tourism icons.

The French couple, both aged 22, were in their campervan at 10.45pm on Saturday night when they were approached by a female and male Maori who Panvimanasked for a cigarette lighter.

Shortly afterwards the female produced a pistol and the male a baseball bat, police said. A scuffle ensued in which the male tourist was pistol-whipped.

The tourists tried to alert nearby houses by sounding the van’s horn.  This scared the offenders off and the victims ran to a nearby house to call police. The male tourist received injuries to his eye and his cheek and the female was unharmed.

NZ Detective Mike Signal said police were seeking the public’s help to identify the offenders.

“We’re very keen to hear from anyone who may know anything about this attack and who was involved.  This was a cowardly and despicable act on two innocent tourists who were enjoying a visit to Hawkes Bay.  They are understandably very shaken by their ordeal.”

Detective Signal said the couple arrived in New Zealand in September for a working holiday.  They speak little English and police used interpreters to help interview them.

Yesterday, NZ Police advised that they had arrested a woman in connection with the assault.

The woman is facing a charge of assault with intent to rob and police say more charges are likely.  Her male co-offender is still at large and police are appealing for information about him.

  1. Bill says:

The arrested woman likes to pistol whip people so think the same should be done to her to see if she likes to be on the receiving end of what she done to the man.
The same should be done to the person with the baseball bat if he is ever caught.
(I don’t think this would ever happen.)
The police could turn a blind eye and let the same punishment be melted out to these 2 cowards if they are convicted.
