The summer holiday period presents all airports with certain challenges. Not only more passengers, but in particular significantly more baggage must be handled. After a good half of the summer holidays in Berlin and Brandenburg have passed, CEO Engelbert Lütke Daldrup has drawn a positive conclusion.

89 airlines currently connect Berlin and Brandenburg with 189 destinations in 56 countries. During the holiday season, an average of 70,000 passengers use Tegel Airport every day, and Schönefeld handles around 40,000 passengers a day. 77 percent of flights from Tegel and 75 percent from Schönefeld take off on time, according to international standards that is a maximum of 15 minutes delayed. Flight disruptions due to cancellations fell sharply in comparison with the previous year.

Delays in air traffic can arise in different ways and due to different parties working together at the airport. According to international standards, the following causes are distinctive at Berlin’s airports: delayed arrivals or rather postponements in the aircraft rotation, restrictions on air traffic control and route capacities, delays in aircraft and apron handling, in passenger and baggage handling, in statutory tasks of customs and the Bundespolizei (German Federal Police), and delays due to airport infrastructure. In Berlin, only a few delays are due to airport infrastructure. The main causes are due to airlines and airspace capacities.
