Tourist’s itch a mystery as hotel manager denies bedbugs

egtmedia59A tourist has lodged a complaint with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), claiming to have been attacked in the middle of the night by bedbugs during a visit to Bangkok. The insects caused intolerable itching, the tourist said.

TAT replied that it would forward the complaint to the hotel “and they should reply to you directly,” the Bangkok Post reported – but when the paper contacted the hotel, the manager emphatically denied that any bedbugs were present. BEDBUG

Lionel Loh from Singapore, who was making a two-day visit to the Thai capital, booked the Bangkok Cha-Da Hotel online through Agoda. After he and a Thai friend checked in, however, Loh says his whole body started to itch unbearably, especially his legs and hands. He and his Thai friend had to go to a convenience store to buy medicated oil to soothe the itching.

Loh says he contacted a doctor back home in Singapore who said bedbugs were likely to be responsible. Bedbugs look a bit like cockroaches, only smaller, and cause an itchy rash.

When the Bangkok Post contacted the hotel manager, however, he responded that the hotel was entirely free of bedbugs.

The manager said he was he was aware of the case and could confirm that “there are no bugs at the hotel,” adding that all rooms and amenities were regularly checked and cleaned. No one else had complained of any such thing and the case was unprecedented at the hotel, Kitiphat Houngtin told the paper.

…bedbugs are visible to the naked eye….and all hotels are basically bedbugs free… any claims of bedbugs are immediately investigated by the property management and if found they are immediately exterminated… the problem most of the time are the guests themselves…they move around, get the bed bugs around unknowingly and carry them themselves anywhere…. the poor hotel always get blamed for it… even itchy allergies are blamed to bedbugs in hotels… hoteliers are not stupid to tolerate bedbugs in their property… they even have a logbook for rooms found infected with bedbugs… they don’t sell the room and rooms around it for days…
