Traditional Hawaiian Blessing Ceremony Launches New Summer Activities at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua

On the heels of announcing its “Family Adventure Summer Series,” The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua has acquired an additional authentic Outrigger Canoe.

The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua has acquired an additional authentic Outrigger Canoe, blessed by the resort’s Cultural Advisor. This blessing ceremony launches new summer activities, including a July 4th Summer Splash BBQ, and reinforces the hotel’s cultural ties to Maui.

This new addition will enhance the plethora of activity options available through Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ambassadors of the Environment Program this summer. In a traditional Hawaiian ceremony, the canoe was blessed by the resort’s Cultural Advisor and named, “Ka Manu O Honokahua,” (The Bird of Honokahua), after the Princess Kaniaulono who is buried in the slopes above the resort. “The ‘bird’ is in reference to the royal families since birds flew higher in the heavens and thus putting them closer to the Gods,” said Clifford Nae’ole, Cultural Advisor for The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua. “This is why our royalty were always adorned in feathers. The ‘bird’ also refers to the ability of the canoe to fly upon the currents of the waves with ease.” Last March, Nae’ole coordinated a cleanup of the Princess’ burial site as part of the resort’s premier annual cultural festival, Celebration of the Arts.

The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua continues to reinforce its cultural and environmental ties to Maui through the Ambassadors program and many new food and beverage offerings. These new offerings will also feature local ingredients some even sourced from the resort’s own onsite organic garden. The newly unveiled opportunities to gather and enjoy each other’s company and the Hawaiian culture throughout the summer are highlighted by a July 4th Summer Splash BBQ and fashion show:
