A group of Travel Counsellors recently experienced the epic landscapes, quaint cities, kind hospitality and thriving food and wine scene of New Zealand’s South Island on a familiarisation tour hosted by Christchurch & Canterbury Tourism.

Travelling from April 4 – 8, Melissa Briggs, Rebecca Lipscomb and Chrissie Shah took part in the self-drive itinerary that included a good mix of Christchurch and Canterbury’s well known sites and secret spots in equal measure. From the garden art of Christchurch Botanic Gardens to the stunning vistas of Lake Tekapo and the cool beauty of the Tasman Glacier, this tour showcased New Zealand’s natural beauty at its best.

Apart from soaking up the scenery, relaxing in hot springs and taking in the starry night sky at an observatory, the group also visited some of New Zealand’s premier food and wine destinations including Pegasus Bay Winery and Restaurant, Tin Plate Kitchen & Bar and Twenty Seven Steps in Christchurch.

“This trip highlighted how wonderful New Zealand’s food and wine scene is. From casual meals to fine dining and everything in between, the chefs, bar tenders, wine makers and food producers of New Zealand are really dedicated to delivering quality food and wine experiences. It really is a top destination for foodies and wine lovers,” says Chrissie.

Hide and seek

“It was really interesting to see how Christchurch is recovering after the earthquake. It’s a resilient city, and the residents have done so well to rebuild after such a devastating event. The good news is there’s plenty to see and do there, and I’ll be recommending Christchurch and the surrounding areas to my customers in the future,” says Melissa of WA.

Fred van Eijk, Acting Managing Director Travel Counsellors Australia believes that having intimate knowledge of New Zealand is incredibly important for Australian agents. “New Zealand is a perennially popular destination for Australian travellers of all ages, life stages and travel styles. Whether it’s self-funded retirees heading off on self-drive adventures, families making the most of the ski season or young couples and singles keen on wine tasting and boutique hotel stays, New Zealand is top of the list for many Australian travellers. Trips like this allow our agents to get under the skin of this region so they can sell New Zealand with confidence. I’m glad our agents took the time to experience this part of New Zealand and I trust more Travel Counsellors will in the future also,” comments Fred.
