Solo travel looks like being a major trend this year, with research indicating that one in four Australians plans to travel alone for the first time in 2017.

Aussies love travelling and that seems to be official. Memories of travelling are so strong that 63% of people remember their first time travelling better than their first date, according to research commissioned by

She says can offer every accommodation alternative from apartments to villas, igloos, boats, treehouses and more – to make it easier to explore the world.

The research also found:

  • 42% of Australians started travelling at an early age (10 years old or younger).
  • The US, UK, Thailand, and Argentina are the most exciting countries to explore, Australians say.
  • Top international destinations for first-time Australian travellers are, in descending order: London, Auckland, Singapore, Suva, Hong Kong, Vienna, Kuta, Lautoka, Paris and Manila. Considering the distance, London beating Auckland is a surprise.
  • Top domestic destinations for first-time Australian travellers are, in descending order: Sydney, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide.
  • Overall, scenery (58%), activities available (52%), local food (45%), and local culture (45%) contribute most to making a country exciting
  • In terms of their favourite things about travelling to a new place for the first time, Australians like taking in the local culture (52%) and trying the local foods (48%).

Looking at the international picture, the number one planned destination for solo travellers around the world is… Australia! Sydney, specifically, is nominated as one of the Top 10 destinations for first-time travel.
