Travel Trending Towards Immersive Itineraries

GONE are the days when travellers joining group tours accepted long hours motoring around in stuffy coaches watching the places they’ve waited a lifetime to see flash past the window.

The latest holiday trend sees savvy sightseers demanding relaxed itineraries, with programs including time to get under the skin of the places they visit, and Latitude 33 is answering the call by creating thoughtful journeys that revolutionise organised tours by embracing the concept of slow travel.

“We provide intimate group travel for people that detest mass and generic group tours,” explains Latitude 33 founder Brett Dudley.

“We don’t have name badges, our journeys aren’t created so tourists rush from one location to the next merely ticking off destinations, and the accommodation we select adds to the experience rather than just being a handy place to stop for the night.

“Our journeys are all about becoming immersed in a destination and Latitude 33’s Deserts and Glaciers Tour, which departs in October, is an example exploring two of South America’s most famous and remote regions at an easy speed.

“The feedback we’re receiving is there’s no other tour like it in the market – we spend six nights in Patagonia and five nights in the Atacama – and other tour companies spend one or two nights in each place which makes this a tour of airports and hotel lobbies rather than these rare and remote landscapes.

“We filled every place on the tour in just a few hours last month which shows the appetite for tours that don’t dash about.”

After rapidly selling the South American itinerary Latitude 33 turned to Africa – a destination attracting increased interest from seasoned travellers in 2018 now the problems of past have settled – with 2019’s African West Coast, Gorillas and the Mara another itinerary satisfying the need for immersive encounters.

The experience, which features a three-night-stay at Rwanda’s Virunga Lodge and five nights at Angama Mara in Kenya, also attracted immediate attention to be 75 per cent full more than 12 months before departure.
