According to Sujata Raman, Managing Director of pioneering global travel company Abercrombie & Kent, leisure travel remains high on the agenda for most Australians in 2014.

New and out of the way destinations, escorted tours, specialist itineraries: these are just some of the things that are proving increasingly popular with travellers.

Here Sujata shares her views on what’s trending in travel right now and what’s around the corner.

Join a specialist escort and see the world through new eyes.

“Travelling with a purpose and with a specialist escort to accompany you is the next big thing on the A&K drawing board”, says Sujata. “In response to demand from our guests, a portfolio of journeys is planned to a range of destinations around the globe, each with a particular focus. There will be trips with a photographic focus, culinary tours, art and history experiences, wildlife and more. They will comprise small numbers of travellers united by the desire to visit the destination in style and with an entertaining and accomplished expert to add to the camaraderie.”

Where to next – let A&K do the leg work.

With more and more destinations opening up to the well-heeled traveller, A&K still manages to find remote and off the beaten track locations to entice. Sujata’s predictions about the next ‘up and coming’, ‘get there soon’ places?  The Northwest Passage, Madagascar and Costa Rica. Watch this space.

An industry pioneer continues to inspire.

In 2014 an exclusive private jet tour designed by A&K’s founder Geoffrey Kent combines some of his favourite destinations with exotic locales few travellers ever visit has proven to be one of A&K’s most popular itineraries amongst A&K’s more well-heeled clients global according to Sujata. The ‘Islands, Savannahs & the Amazon’ itinerary takes a select group of travellers from the world’s mightiest river to its most mysterious islands (Easter Island, Samoa, Komodo, Sri Lanka and Madagascar), from a land where dragons roam to savannahs with iconic wildlife in abundance. Guests also meet with Geoffrey Kent at an exclusive event in his adopted home of Monaco.

The 2015 departure the 26-day ‘Islands, Savannahs & the Amazon’ will operate from 12 October through 6 November 2015 and is limited to 50 guests.

Pricing: US$108,000 per person, double occupancy. Single supplement $15,000.

Slow down and celebrate.

For landmark birthdays, wedding parties or a Christmas away, Sujata observes villa retreats are also becoming more and more popular with travellers after a different and more personal experience than hotels can sometimes provide. “A&K has a number of villas in its portfolio, each with a unique location, outstanding furnishings and fittings, staff on hand round the clock plus unmatched service,” she says. Villa destinations include Sri Lanka, Indonesia, South Africa and Fiji.

Travel with a conscience.

A&K has long recognised the importance of giving back to the communities it travels to, protecting wildlife and promoting indigenous welfare. Sujata notes that many of A&K’s guests now share this aspiration and are actively seeking out destinations where they can be involved in these sorts of initiatives. In response, interested guests are offered the opportunity to support A&K Philanthropy (AKP). AKP undertakes many projects across the globe that A&K travellers can visit and be part of including @MyLibrary in Luang Prabang, where AKP’s support involved provide books and computer programmes utilised by everyone from teenage students to monks in saffron robes.

More time to relax, unwind and experience new destinations afloat.

There’s no denying that river cruising is one of the fastest growing trends in travel at the moment. Says Sujata, “It’s a relaxed and leisurely way to experience beautiful destinations with all the convenience it offers. There’s no packing and moving on after each stop; ships are comfortable and well designed; most meals are included, you’re looked after with care and consideration and the daily stops are fascinating insights into each country visited.”

In 2014 and 2015 A&K’s most popular river cruises include the Sanctuary Ananda on the Ayeyarwady and Chindwin Rivers (Myanmar), Sanctuary Yangzi Explorer (China), Amadeus Brilliant (Danube and Rhine Rivers), Volga Dream (Russia), Aqua Expeditions (Peruvian Amazon) and The Jahan (Mekong River).
