Travelers Select Chicago And Cancun, Mexico As Top Domestic And International Thanksgiving Destinations
According to Allianz Global Assistance’s 2015 Top 10 Holiday Destinations Report, the majority of travelers booked domestic trips to Chicago, followed by Atlanta, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, Newark, New York, Seattle, Denver and Boston this Thanksgiving. International bookings were led by Cancun, followed by London, Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta (both in Mexico); San Juan, Puerto Rico; Paris, France; Mexico City, Mexico; Nassau, Bahamas; San Jose, Costa Rica; and Aruba.
Whether travelers fly or choose ground transportation to their Thanksgiving destinations this year, Allianz recommends the following tips to minimize unexpected or unforeseen hassles and delays typically associated with the busy holiday travel season, starting with turkey week.
The night before flying, consider punching in your airline, rail, and hotel confirmation numbers in your phone, and pack only a carry-on. The day before driving, pack and load the car and fill your gas tank. But whether you drive, fly or take the train or bus, always add plenty of extra time and space to your travel schedule, especially Thanksgiving eve, Wednesday, November 25th.
Thanksgiving Day usually presents a less stressful travel experience, as airfares are usually much cheaper, and the crowds tend to thin out quite a bit at airports, train and bus stations, while drivers contend with significantly less highway traffic.
Thanksgiving week is also a time when some of the best international airfares are available, since most Americans travel domestically. This means last-minute trips to Europe, Mexico or the Caribbean are less expensive than traveling during the Christmas/New Year’s period.
“As Thanksgiving quickly approaches, we strongly suggest buying travel insurance at the same time travelers book their trips,” said Joe Mason, chief marketing officer at Allianz Global Assistance USA. “Travelers may be refunded if they have to cancel their trip for a reason covered by their travel insurance policy. And while Thanksgiving is a popular time for families, Allianz’s classic policy provides great benefits since kids are covered for free and parents don’t pay extra for children 17 years old or younger.“
Whether it’s a covered trip cancellation or a medical emergency, travel insurance can provide important benefits that can prevent travelers from losing large deposits and will cover them for emergency medical treatment, up to the limits of their policy. It’s also important to remember that U.S. health insurance policies (including Medicare and Medicaid) may not cover international travel; those that do may not cover the cost of medical evacuation.
