Travellers Choice funds ATAS membership for all agents

Travellers Choice is today setting a new benchmark for agent support by becoming the first national retail travel group to fund the full cost of participation for all its members in the newly-launched AFTA Travel Accreditation Scheme (ATAS).

The group, which already funds full AFTA membership for all its agents, will also now pay for membership of the new voluntary accreditation scheme, which came into effect on 1 July 2014. All current and future Travellers Choice agents will be required to meet ATAS criteria in order to be part of Australia’s leading independent network.

Chief Executive Christian Hunter says the Travellers Choice Board views ATAS accreditation as an essential requirement of being a reputable, successful and professional travel agent.

“ATAS accreditation is designed to offer travellers peace-of-mind by endorsing the quality and reliability of participating travel agents,” says Hunter. “With the demise of state-based licensing it is now the most important test of business credibility an Australian travel agent can undertake.

“As such, we believe it is vital that whenever consumers engage with Travellers Choice – whether it is through our independent agents or our national advertising activities – they do so in the knowledge that every member of our group is qualified under the scheme.”

AFTA Chief Executive Jayson Westbury described the Travellers Choice decision as “a very positive move”.

“All Travellers Choice members will now benefit from the ongoing national campaign that recognises ATAS accredited agents in a de-regulated industry environment,” says Westbury.

Travellers Choice members were informed of the ATAS development during a series of meetings held in state capitals over the past week.

“There was enthusiastic and widespread support, with our member shareholders greeting the Board’s decision as a sensible way to promote and protect the Travellers Choice brand,” says Hunter.
