Mogo Zoo (in southern New South Wales), Werribee Open Range Zoo (outside Melbourne) and Rainbow Jungle (a parrot sanctuary in the WA town of Kalbarri) are Australia’s top three wildlife attractions, according toTripAdvisor™ travellers around the world.

Although Melbourne Zoo, Taronga Zoo and Australia Zoo received the most reviews of any wildlife attraction in Australia, it seems the attractions at Mogo, Werribee and Rainbow Jungle have greatly touched the hearts of TripAdvisor travellers. Additionally, Mogo, Werribee and Rainbow Jungle are TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence 2013 award winners.

The top ten wildlife attractions in Australia are as follows*:

1.       Mogo Zoo – Mogo, NSW
2.       Werribee Open Range Zoo – Werribee, VIC
3.       Rainbow Jungle – Kalbarri, WA
4.       Australian Reptile Park – Somersby, Central Coast, NSW
5.       Melbourne Zoo – Melbourne, VIC
6.       Taronga Western Plains Zoo – Dubbo, NSW
7.       Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas  – Port Douglas, QLD
8.       Halls Gap Zoo – The Grampians, VIC
9.       Perth Zoo – Perth, WA
10.   Healesville Sanctuary – Healesville, VIC

Hands-on encounters with meerkats, pygmy marmosets and other animals; a ‘zoo-keeper for a day’ program; passionate staff; and a natural setting the right size for small children were marked for mention at Mogo Zoo which is located in the small gold-mining town of Mogo, near Bateman’s Bay. In the words of one TripAdvisor traveller: “The Ring-tailed Lemurs are so beautiful to look at…to have these animals on your lap and eating from your hands is fantastic.”

Safari rides through the grounds were the highlight at Werribee Open Range Zoo outside Melbourne. As one TripAdvisor traveller said: “Awesome day out with family. My son could see the cheetah up close as it came to the window.”

Wandering amongst a multitude of parrots in a free-flight aviary fitted with water features and stained glass was an unexpected delight at Rainbow Jungle in Kalbarri, a small town on the mid-WA coast. According to one TripAdvisor traveller: “Beautiful setting with lots and lots of birds to interact with. Spotted a whale from the whale watching tower as well.”
