Tropical North Queensland is the highest awarded destination in the State after picking up the most Queensland Tourism Awards of any region last night (November 22).

Tourism Tropical North Queensland Chief Executive Officer Rob Giason said a record 52 nominees from the region entered the Queensland awards this year with 23 receiving awards.

“This optimism reflects Tropical North Queensland’s status as the number one destination in Queensland and Australia’s third most favoured destination after Sydney and Melbourne for international holiday visitors,” he said.250x250TICBanner

“In fact, our region is currently driving tourism growth in Australia with a bumper 16 per cent increase in international holiday visitors for the year ending June 2013.

“This current growth is a result of a bold strategy to increase tourism expenditure for Tropical North Queensland by $1 billion to $3.2 billion by 2015.

“Of course we could not achieve this without the unique beauty of the region’s dual World Heritage areas of the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics rainforest as a draw card.

“We also are fortunate to have tourism operators with exceptionally high standards of service delivery as well as the distinction of innovative tour options.

“Tropical North Queensland boasts more than 100 ways to experience the Great Barrier Reef and has more than 600 tours departing daily to the reef, rainforest and our many other attractions.

“I congratulate the winners on their success and thank them for the valuable contribution they are making in setting such high standards for our industry.”
