Trump pushes for new travel ban as London erupts

June 5, 2017 Headline News No Comments Email Email

President Donald Trump’s lawyers have asked the US Supreme Court to revive the president’s travel ban, which seeks to ban travellers from six majority-Muslim countries.

Trump’s initial order covered seven countries and caused chaos at US airports, with some travellers taking off for the US with legal visas which became invalid before they landed. A revised order was due to take effect in March but the courts halted it hours before it took effect.

Courts are considering whether Trump’s revised order represents a real effort to protect America from terrorism, as the president claims, or a thinly disguised scheme to ban Muslim travellers in line with Trump’s campaign pledge to enact “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States”.

If it’s aimed at Muslims it may well contravene US constitutional guarantees on freedom of religion.

Trump sent out a tweet yesterday: “We need to be smart, vigilant and tough. We need the courts to give us back our rights. We need the Travel Ban as an extra level of safety!”

A few hours later, he tweeted: “We must stop being politically correct and get down to the business of security for our people. If we don’t get smart it will only get worse.”

Trump also sent a tweet in support of Britain after the latest London terrorist outrage: “Whatever the United States can do to help out in London and the U.K., we will be there – WE ARE WITH YOU. GOD BLESS!”

News of the London atrocity, in which a van mowed down pedestrians and a gang of Islamist knifemen went on a stabbing frenzy while shouting “This is for Allah!” may help swing public opinion behind Trump on the travel ban. (For latest on the London attack and tourism aspects see: Australians caught in latest London terror attack) It is the US Supreme Court, however, which will decide whether Trump’s travel ban is permissible.
