UI Travel PLC, one of the world’s leading leisure and travel companies and owner of Thomson and First Choice, has collected nearly two tonnes of rubbish from beaches around the world.

As part of Make Holidays Greener month, an industry-wide campaign run by sustainable tourism charity the Travel Foundation in July each year, TUI Travel organised over 30 beach cleans in 20 destinations, during which 700 people took part and approximately 400 bags of rubbish were collected. This amassed to over 35,000 pieces of rubbish from 30 kilometres of beach worldwide.

The purpose of Make Holidays Greener month is to build understanding of the simple steps that everyone can take to protect the environment and local wildlife on holiday. Thomson and First Choice promoted the campaign to customers throughout July in stores, on aircraft, and in destinations.

Kicking off at the beginning of July in Brighton in the UK, TUI Travel colleagues joined other industry members to clean Hove beach, collecting over 1,000 pieces of rubbish.

Throughout the month, colleagues, suppliers and customers came together to participate in beach cleans around the world from Spain to Jamaica. In Turkey, volunteers collected 216 bags of rubbish from 7 beaches, while in the Dominican Republic, 127 people cleaned 4 beaches collecting 68 bags of rubbish.

Jane Ashton, Director of Group Sustainable Development, TUI Travel, who took part in the beach clean in Brighton, said, “The beach clean events have been a resounding success across the globe. Clean beaches aren’t just important for holidaymakers, they are also essential for coastal communities and wildlife. It has been a great effort from all the TUI Travel colleagues and customers who have given up their time during Make Holidays Greener month to contribute to this worthwhile initiative.”
