Turkey Expands Hotel Portfolio as International Visitors Increase

Turkey has become home to some of the most rapid hotel and resort developments across Europe and Asia as the number of visitors to the world’s sixth most popular tourist destination reaches a record 35 million.
With the number of U.S. visitors growing by 6.5 percent in the past year contributing to a total of 34.9 million worldwide visitors in 2013, (a total increase of 9.8 percent), brands including St. Regis, Hilton, Four Seasons and Sheraton are bringing more new properties in 2014 and beyond to cater to the growing number of visitors. As the sixth-most visited country in the world, the latest Turkish properties are incorporating wellness centers and spas to reflect the country’s heritage as home of the world’s spa, hamam and thermal spring culture.

Some of the most recent developments include:

  • The St. Regis Istanbul is slated to open this summer in the sophisticated Nişantaşi neighborhood on the European side of the city. The area offers easy access to chic boutiques, restaurants, cafes, the Istanbul Congress Center and Taksim Square. PTM_250-x-250Designed by award-winning Turkish architect Emre Arolat, the 118-room hotel will overlook the Bosphorus. Special features include a 2,000 square foot presidential suite, the brand’s signature butler service, a rooftop restaurant, lobby bar, spa, fitness club and business center along with meeting rooms and a ballroom.
  • A new Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts property is slated to open in 2016 in Cesme, near Alacati. The picturesque Aegean town, located on the coast of Turkey’s Izmir province, has long drawn the Turkish elite thanks to the area’s rich culture, cuisine, vineyards and therapeutic thermal springs. The luxurious Four Seasons Resort Cesme will also provide access to exciting historic sites such as the ancient city of Ephesus as well as some of the world’s top windsurfing and kitesurfing spots.
  • The House Hotel Vault Karakoy will open in March, 2014, in Istanbul’s up-and-coming district of Karaköy on Bankalar Caddesi and is a convenient launching pad for exploring bohemian Beyoğlu and historic Sultanahmet. With views of Topkapı Palace and the Spice Market, the hotel occupies two back-to-back historic buildings: the neo-Renaissance 1863 former Crédit Général Ottoman and the erstwhile community center of the Neve Shalom congregation. The building was restored by the award-winning Turkish architect Han Tümertekin, while the interiors were designed by Sinan Kafadar.
  • Scheduled to debut late 2014, Sheraton Samsun Hotel will be the first international five-star hotel in the emerging business city of Samsun and Starwood’s 11th hotel in Turkey. Samsun is the largest and busiest Turkish port on the Black Sea, and the 29-story hotel will be the largest hotel and the tallest building in Samsun. The hotel will have 200 guest rooms and 20 suites all with views of the Black Sea, an all-day dining venue, specialty restaurant, lobby bar, and rooftop bar and lounge as well as extensive meeting and event space, including a grand ballroom, 10 meeting rooms and a business center. The hotel’s signature Sheraton Shine Spa will have 10 treatment rooms and an indoor pool.
  • Hilton Worldwide also has a number of new Turkish properties in the pipeline, including a new 200-room Hilton Antakya set to open early this year, located near the Church of St. Peter as part of a new site that will also include an archaeological museum. The hotel will have a spa, indoor and outdoor pools and 4,100 square feet of meeting space. In Istanbul, the 126-room Hilton Garden Inn Istanbul Beylikduzu, set in a mixed use space in one of Western Istanbul’s fastest growing suburbs, is slated to open in 2015, and will feature an indoor pool and five meeting rooms; and a 170-room Hampton-by-Hilton Istanbul Dolapdere in central Istanbul is set to open in 2016. In Izmir, the 115-room DoubleTree by Hilton Izmir – Alsancak, a conversion of the existing Yildizhan Hotel, is slated to open this year following a $1 million refurbishment. The hotel, located near the existing Hilton Izmir, will provide 2,625 square feet of meeting space, a fitness center and spa. And opening in 2016, the 182-room Hilton Garden Inn Izmir Bayrakli will be conveniently located just north of the city’s port and central district.
  • Istanbul’s largest hotel and conference center, the Hilton Istanbul Bomonti Hotel & Conference Center opened in January, 2014, in the cosmopolitan Sisli section of the city. The hotel offers almost 40,000 square feet of meeting space, indoor and outdoor pools, 829 rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows, an all-day dining restaurant and rooftop bar with stunning views of the Bosphorus.
  • Radisson Blu Conference & Spa Hotel, Istanbul Tuzla, parent company Carlson Rezidor’s 7th Istanbul hotel property, opened in January 2014 with 249 rooms. Located in the Tuzla district of Anatolian Istanbul, the hotel offers 10,800 square feet of meeting facilities, indoor and outdoor pools, a wellness area with sauna, Hamam and massage facilities and a tennis court. Tuzla, home to Istanbul’s Formula 1 race track, the Turkish Naval Academy and several universities, is a popular spot for second homes outside the busy city center of Istanbul.
  • The 210-room Fairmont Istanbul, slated to open in 2016, will be part of the Quasar Istanbul complex, a new mixed-use development in the Sisli district.  Two 41-story towers will include a Fairmont Hotel and Fairmont Residences as well as Quasar Residences and offices. The hotel will feature Fairmont Gold, the brand’s ‘hotel within a hotel’ and will offer a several lounges and restaurants, 6,562 square feet of function space and a Willow Stream Spa. There’s also a historic distillery repurposed as a culture, fashion and arts center for special events, and an urban park and recreation area.
  • The five-star, 219-room Wyndham Izmir Özdilek, debuted in 2013 as the brand’s third hotel in Turkey, joining the Wyndham Istanbul Kalamis Marina, which opened in 2012 and Wyndham Istanbul Petek which opened last summer. The new hotel will provide Izmir with a fine dining restaurant along with six other food and beverage outlets and event space for up to 400 people. An extensive spa and wellness center will include separate outdoor and indoor pools for children and adults, fitness center, exercise classes, thermal pool and whirlpool as well asaTurkish bath, sauna, steam room and 20 treatment rooms.
  • The 102-room Holiday Inn Express Manisa – West, which opened in January 2014, is just steps from the industrial zone of Manisa, and 25 miles away from both Adnan Menderes Airport and Izmir city center. Rooms include a complimentary breakfast buffet and high speed Internet access and are equipped with tea/coffee maker and mini bar. Hotel facilities include a meeting room and business center. In addition, a 161-room Holiday Inn Diyarbakir is slated to open in 2015 in the heart of the historic district of this growing business hub in southeastern Turkey.
  • The 176-room Ramada Encore Izmir which opened in late 2013, is the first of 30 planned Ramada Encore properties to be developed in Turkey over the next ten years. The midscale brand property features vibrant social spaces and innovative bathrooms with walk-in power showers. The Ramada Encore Izmir also offers a fitness center and meeting space for up to 200 people. It is located in the Egepark Shopping Mall, just seven miles from central Izmir and 11 miles from Adnan Menderes Airport.
  • Slated to open in May, 2014, the Mercure Istanbul Taksim is located in the heart of the Taksim Square tourist and leisure district. The 137-room, mid-scale property will also have its own restaurant and bar.
