Turkish Delights at UFTAA Golden Jubilee

The United Federation of Travel Agents Association (UFTAA) reached the landmark milestone of its Golden Jubilee this year. The momentous event was celebrated in Istanbul, Turkey on the 25th and 26th of November and was hosted by TURSAB (the Association of Turkish travel agencies) and supported by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Turkey as well as Turkish Airlines.

The prestigious event was well attended by both UFTAA members as well as non-members at the magnificent Hilton Istanbul Bosphorus. The Golden Jubilee Congress saw a board meeting prior to the main event and otherwise comprised of organized business conclaves, a B2B exhibition, the general assembly, IATA forum and the gala dinner on the 26th. The 300-strong delegates representing leading global tour operators and travel and tourism associations took away an indelible learning from the illuminating speaker sessions and panel discussions.

On this historic occasion, Sunil Kumar, President UFTAA, was cited as having said that the Association has a big dream to discover the next level. Even as he averred that the travel and tourism industry is among the top revenue earners in many countries, with the largest employment generation, he asked some valid questions, namely: ‘Are we prepared for this exponential future? Are we training young adults to handle this massive growth? What should our emphasis be to proactively encounter and optimise this humungous growth?’

UFTAA is the longest, actively negotiating agency involving airline and IATA-pertinent issues and was established fifty years ago by far-sighted tourism professionals who saw the need for a united, global tourism organization in a fast-evolving world. The inception saw the merger of the Federation Internationale des Agences de Voyages (FIAV) and the Universal Organisation of Travel Agents’ Associations (UOTAA) to form the Universal Federation of Travel Agents’ Associations on the 22nd November 1966 in Rome, which name was later amended to the United Federation of Travel Agents’ Associations. UFTAA has been instrumental in several wide-ranging changes favouring the travel and tourism industry, partnering with other international organizations such as WHO, UNWTO, IRU and others.
