Australian surfing superstar Tyler Wright hit the Sydney beaches today for the first time since claiming her world champion title as the officialambassador for the 2017 Australian Open of Surfing.
Wright visited Manly Beach, the iconic home of the Australian Open of Surfing, while NSW Premier and Member for Manly Mike Baird announced her as the face of Australia’s biggest beach event, which will take place next February.
“I’m absolutely pumped and looking forward to being the face of the Australian Open of Surfing. 2016 has been a breakthrough year for me, and what better way to kick-start the 2017 season than at Manly Beach – at an event that I’ve always loved competing at and really enjoyed the vibe of,” said Tyler Wright.
“I am always grateful to start in Australia, and with my family by my side is always a blessing,” Tyler added.
Owned and operated by IMG and part of the WSL Qualifying Series (QS) tour, the fifth edition of the Australian Open of Surfing will run from the 25 Feb to 5 March 2017.
The nine-day event will attract top surfers – including Wright – to the birthplace of Australian surfing, in addition to more than 325,000 beach-lovers of all ages from across the world.
NSW Premier and Member for Manly Mike Baird said that Tyler Wright’s inclusion will make the 2017 Australian Open of Surfing the biggest and best yet.
“It’s fantastic to see our newest World Champion, Tyler Wright, coming to Manly to compete in the Australian Open of Surfing next year. Manly is one of the world’s best beaches, and it’s only fitting it plays host to the world’s best female surfer. It’s great news for the event and great news for local Manly businesses, which will see a big influx in visitors from 25 February to 5 March next year.”
As part of the announcement this morning on Manly Beach, Wright was presented with a custom designed rashie for the 2017 Australian Open of Surfing, donning the number 1 to represent her ascension to the top of the world rankings.
