On behalf of All Hands and Hearts – Smart Response, philanthropist and supermodel Petra Nemcova, was thrilled to announce the completion ofNibugaun School (built by U by Uniworld and its foundation TreadRight) in the Sindhupalchok district of Nepal, with a ceremonial school reopening to the Principal and its rural community.

With the 2017 announcement of Nemcova as U by Uniworld’s ‘Guardian Angel’, the youthful river cruising brand donated US $50,000 to support her charity and the rebuild of Nibugaun School. After the 2015 earthquake which had left the school unsafe due to a devastating magnitude of over 7.3 – thanks to the relief efforts over 11 weeks, two buildings have been refitted, providing four disaster resilient classrooms, four toilets, installed water filtration and built a playground. The school serves ECD (Early Childhood Development), between the ages of four to 11.

Nemcova and guests were warmly greeted by its joyous community and branded with a red tika (dot) on their forehead, a symbol of good luck to mark the celebration, followed by a fire being lit to signify new beginnings and a bright future for the many generations to come. Volunteers from Australia and all over the world were praised for their commitment to the project.

Students, who were ecstatic as the ribbon was cut for the opening of their classrooms, treated guests to a traditional dance and sung a touching poem they wrote themselves – “Svagata (welcome) to our school, thanks for helping us and being part of our community…” They were each gifted Ma-Powered solar lights to help them continue their education at home and read at night.

Nemcova, co-founder of All Hands and Hearts – Smart Response, stated: “Today, during the school re-opening ceremony, we could feel the power of meaningful connections which has resulted into the creation of a new disaster resilient school and also new beginnings for the whole community. When our volunteers,  staff, committee members and our supporters come together, far away dreams can be made into reality. Living youthfully, fully and connecting with others in a meaningful way, for me, is the essence of U by Uniworld too – we have so much in common, and now also this purposeful partnership.”

Ellen Betttridge, President & CEO of U by Uniworld, commented: “We are proud to have the beautifully spirited Petra as our Guardian Angel, what she stands for is a true representation of our values. To be partnered with her organization that’s making a difference in the world by giving back to communities, and helping thousands of children by bringing education and joy back into their lives – truly makes her an ‘angel’ to many.”

All Hands and Hearts – Smart Response, an organization co-founded following Nemcova’s harrowing experience during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, effectively and efficiently addresses the immediate and long-term needs of communities impacted by natural disasters. By listening to local people, and deploying their unique model of engaging volunteers to enable direct impact, they rebuild safe, resilient schools, homes and other community infrastructure. The non-profit has been working in 13 countries around the world and has helped rebuild over 200 schools, assisting over 100,000 students in getting back to school following natural disasters.
