The exclusive Tower Club at Republic Plaza has partnered with the Embassy of Ukraine to present the best of Ukrainian cuisine by renowned Ukrainian Guest Yuri Kovryzhenko. This food fest is taking place from now until 4 November 2016.
Ukraine Ambassador to Singapore Mr. Dmytro Senik said, “The primary goal of the Ukrainian gourmet week is to bring people together and to increase awareness of Ukraine. It will celebrate the diversity of flavours and showcase our cuisine as an important part of the Ukrainian culture. Traditional food is not simply made using local produce but reflects certain aspects of the public life and very often serves as symbols for a particular region.”
“To Ukrainians, meals are not just about consuming food, but rather centuries of cultivated traditions, hospitality, welcome, and culture. Ukrainians love to entertain guests, and that is why we are inviting everyone to a modern interpretation of our feast of traditions by Ukraine Chef Yuri Kovryzhenko,” said Mr. Senik.
This is Chef Yuri’s first visit to Singapore and Asia. It is part of his culinary tour to promote the Eastern European cuisine.
Chef Yuri is offering a set lunch and dinner throughout the Ukraine Gourmet Week in Tower Club that includes the Ukrainian borscht (beetroot soup normally served in central Europe), meat rolls, pierogi (dumplings with mushroom and potatoes, a popular dish in the Western Ukraine), and cottage cheese pancakes. The week-long event will finally culminate with a Ukrainian Gala Dinner comprising traditional Ukraine dishes and an avant garde presentation of Borscht Soup using Liquid Nitrogen. The event will also include a special duet between Chef Yuri and Ukrainian violinist Oleksandr Korniev.
“We are very happy to have the support of the Ukrainian Embassy to bring in Chef Yuri and offer our members the opportunity to savour and explore a new cuisine in the Club,” said Tower Club General Manager Mr Peter Schori.
Located in the CBD on the 62nd -64th floor in Republic Plaza, the flagship building of City Developments Limited (CDL), the Tower Club is a premier private club in Singapore that provides luxury facilities and personalized service to members and guests, and offers breathtaking views of Singapore’s city skyline.
Chef Yuri has worked in kitchens across Europe including a stint as the Head Chef at Kobzar, the Ukrainian Embassy’s official restaurant in Tbilisi, Georgia. The traditional ingredients that Chef Yuri most enjoy working with include beetroot, carrots, soft cheese, and sour cream.
When asked what he thought of his first visit to Singapore, Chef Yuri said he discovered that many have yet to try the Ukrainian cuisine and urges Singaporeans to sample the unknown. “It is important for people to try new cuisines and flavours that they’re not familiar with,” he says.
Among foreigners, he says the most popular dishes tend to be Ukrainian-style Beef Rolls, and for dessert, Dumplings with Cherry stuffing, both of which will be served at Tower Club.
Chef Yuri had an unassuming start to his culinary career. His first memory in the kitchen began when he was seven years old while growing up in the Ukraine. He came home from school to an empty house (his mom was at work), and decided to make himself some scrambled eggs and buckwheat cereal.
That simple meal sparked in him a desire to be a great chef, although he took the winding road to the culinary arts. Along the way, he went to school to become a diplomat and even earned a degree in sculpture.
When he finally got back on track, it became a clear journey that saw him move up the ranks in restaurants, supplemented with aggressive culinary education at some of the world’s top institutes including Ferrandi and Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, the Basque Culinary Center in San Sebastian, and the International Academy of Italian Cuisine in Italy where he learned about the Slow Food Movement.
