Unique Flavours, Brazen Designs, Personalisation And Over 500kg Of Chocolate at The Forefront Of New Artisan ‘Choc Shop’ Opening

In an exciting move for Sydney’s sweet-tooths, online chocolatier Bakedown Cakery have opened their flagship store on Sydney’s Lower North shore, bringing handcrafted artisan chocolate, cakes and desserts to the masses. This first ‘Choc Shop’ and public studio for Bakedown Cakery comes following huge consumer demand for the unique range of artistic edible products and the resounding success of the online store which launched earlier this year.

When customers walk into the Bakedown Cakery chocolate studio on Atchison St in St Leonards, housed within the TWT Creative Precinct, there is the instant feel of an art gallery mixed with a science laboratory; displaying signature splashes of colour, blazes of neon and smatterings of sparkles that Bakedown Cakery is best known for.

“Launching the online Choc Shop earlier this year was a big step for Bakedown Cakery; we had previously been best-known for our cakes, cupcakes and tarts and we saw our chocolate range to be an extension of this. We have experienced an unprecedented demand for our signature experimental flavours, textures and look of our products, so opted to open a retail-site allowing our customers to select their products in-person. We wanted to develop a store that delighted the senses and gave our customers the ‘kid in a candy-store’ experience, with stunning products that really catch the eye but also have sophisticated flavour profiles.”, says Jen Lo, Founder and Creative Director of Bakedown Cakery.

Visitors will be entranced by the display of boldly coloured Block-O-Choc’s hand painted in colourful splatters of cocoa butter, a cabinet filled with individual bite sized chocolates with flavours changing regularly, and a selection of eye catching chocolate barks, including the newly launched Face Bark; featuring faces of the customers choosing printed onto a thinly tempered white chocolate.

“There has been such excitement for our new Face Bark product from our online community. We’ve had people choose to print their own faces on the shards of chocolate, their friend’s faces, and even much-loved pets! It’s been huge for Christmas gifting this year when people look for fun and interactive stocking fillers – we’ve even seen it replace the awkward family photo Christmas card! We’ve had such a great response when it comes to Face Bark that we are creating a Face Bark exhibition in-store, showing off some of the best (and most creative) creations from our customers,” says Jen.

Face Bark can be ordered online and collected in-store or shipped Australia-wide. The perfect gift, and retailing for just $25.00, customers will get the experience of premium Belgian chocolate, coupled with the novelty of eating their own face.

A huge appeal for Bakedown Cakery customers, is the ever-changing activity in store. Walk in one dayand you may spot Jen and her team filling hundreds of geometric chocolate bonbons with hazelnut praline and salted caramel, showing off their mouth-watering cupcakes (flavours changing weekly) or decorating a four tier matcha vanilla cake with lashings of lustrously coloured buttercream and edible goodies.

“Keeping things interesting for our customers is a must! Our in-cabinet chocolate range is on constant rotation, using different products and seasonal ingredients to create surprise and excitement in every mouthful. One day you may bite into a Mandarin, Yuzu and Dark Chocolate bonbon, the next, a summer inspired chocolate infusion of Blood Peach and White Chocolate, and the next some homemade, heartwarming fudge. We also have freshly baked cookies and other premium desserts and treats on-hand.”

“Our chocolates are made using only the most premium, quality chocolate from Belgium and France including an assortment of single origin varieties including Madagascar, São Tomé, Ecuador, Brazil, Venezuela, Arriba, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Java to name a few. We go through more than 500kg of chocolate per year. We couple the rich chocolate flavours with premium Australian nuts and dried fruit from New Zealand. We want people to bite into a bar of chocolate and taste the difference, the heritage and the rich flavours that have been carefully curated to bring out the best in taste,” added Jen.

“Whether you walk in to browse our in-store range of chocolates, are looking for a gift, or just want to treat yourself, we want our customers to walk out feeling excited about the world of possibilities available,” says Jen Lo.
