As Canadian university and college students head home for summer, tens of thousands of dorm rooms and apartments will be available for group and tourist bookings, beginning in mid-May and through to late August, at bargain travel rates.

“Rates vary according to the campus, but it is possible to stay in a dorm for as low as $35 a night, a two-bedroom suite for $60 and a four bedroom for around $200,” said Debra Harding, marketing coordinator for the Canadian University and College Conference Organizers Association ( Youth and group rates can also be negotiated at campuses. Dorm rooms are private or semi-private with a shared bathroom, while apartments offer bedrooms with en suite bathrooms plus a kitchen for family use. Townhouse facilities can also be found at campuses as well as year-round hotels for bookings.

A total of 94 colleges and universities from Vancouver Island to Newfoundland are offering space for booking this summer. Past bookings have come from non-profit groups, sports teams, church groups, associations, smaller groups such as families, or, single travelers ranging from backpackers to pensioners.

The Canada-wide CUCCOA website offers provinces by region with each province listing the participating institutions, types of accommodation, and contact information. Harding said the campus range from being centrally located in downtown areas to a short transit ride outside the urban core. As well, they range from major cities to smaller cities located in northern or central provincial areas.  “If you are traveling outside a major city, the website is a good resource to consider as it may provide an interesting overnight stopping point,” she said.

Support services at campuses vary. “But, most campuses can provide meeting and conference space plus the visual services needed, staff support, trade show space, and for sports teams facilities such as playing fields, tracks, and a pool,” she said. Larger campuses offer food outlets but universities can also arrange to have events catered. Many universities also offer scenic areas and chapels suitable for weddings.
