Urban Adventures has launched a new range of meet-ups in cities around the world to cater for the ‘Airbnb generation’.
The ‘Locals on Tap’ tours are set to become the latest extension of the sharing economy and, to give travellers a taste of the new product, Urban Adventures is giving away 100,000 of the new tours.
While the path has been paved by the likes of Uber and Airbnb, these tours aim to offer another incredibly important travel resource; local knowledge. The ‘Locals on Tap’ experiences last between one and two hours and include a walk through a city’s iconic or emerging local neighbourhood. The tours end at an independent bar or café, to allow time for travellers to ask detailed questions about the city and maximise their time with valuable local insight. Everything from riding public transport and finding the best places to eat, to getting tickets for sporting events can be covered in this informal Q&A session. Unlike most guidebooks, apps and websites, this local knowledge is being offered completely in real time. From pop-up restaurants, underground concerts and new store openings, to street closures and transit delays, the value of immediate local knowledge is undeniable.
The tours themselves are aimed at a new breed of travellers who swap hotels for shared spaces, skip tourist sites in favour of local cafes and markets, and want to feel like they’re immersed in the local culture. The line-up is also perfect for people travelling solo, one of the fastest growing trends in travel. The ‘Locals on Tap’ meet-ups will be offered in 50 cities, 365 days a year, with over 150 local guides and city experts.
Urban Adventures currently takes over 140,000 travellers annually on day tours in 91 countries and 154 cities. Up until now, their tours offered a glimpse into a specific local experience that was unique to a destination. The ‘Locals On Tap’ tours will be a complete role reversal that enables travellers to customise their trip and create their own itineraries with the guidance of a local.
“For over five years we have created day tours that offer experiences travellers may not find in a guidebook” says Urban Adventures General Manager, Tony Carne. “Locals on Tap will be the next innovation for us, where our guides take a step back and allow for customers to dictate what insider tips and information they really want. We want to save people time and money by letting them know what locals know, without having to commit to a set theme or itinerary.”
The tours are available in 50 cities, including Florence, Lisbon, Berlin, Shanghai, Honolulu and Singapore. For the full list see urbanadventures.com/locals-on-tap
To give travellers a taste of the new product, Urban Adventures is giving away 100,000 of the new tours from October to December – its biggest ever giveaway.
