Austrian Airlines passengers will be permitted to use their light electronic devices on board, including during takeoff and landing.

The rule applies to all Austrian Airlines routes and is valid for smart phones, tablets, notebooks and other electronic devices with a maximum weight of one kilogram. As of this day, the devices may remain switched without interruption during the entire time on board. The pre-requisite is that all transmitting functions must be deactivated, and the device must be kept in flight mode.

The new rule is based the updated guidance of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) on the use of portable electronic devices on board.

Up until now all electronic devices have had to be completely switched off during takeoff and landing. It is still not permitted to make phone calls once the aircraft doors have been shut until the time they are reopened after landing.

Austrian Airlines

Austrian Airlines is Austria’s largest carrier and operates a global route network of round 130 destinations. That route network is particularly dense in Central and Eastern Europe with 41 destinations. Thanks to its favourable geographical location at the heart of Europe, the company’s hub at Vienna International Airport is the ideal gateway between East and West. Austrian Airlines is part of the Lufthansa Group, Europe’s largest airline group, and a member of the Star Alliance, the first global alliance of international airlines. The flight operations of the Austrian Airlines Group have been bundled at its 100% subsidiary Tyrolean Airways since 1st July, 2012.
