Many people travel for work, while some work to travel. We have seen an enormous growth in the number of travel bloggers in last few years. Travel bloggers share their travel experiences on the go, through blogs, videos, photos via website and social media. For which they need to be digitally connected all the time. Business personnel need to travel for work purposes or family trips and they need to work while travelling, which makes them dependent on certain devices and gadgets.
Aussies love to travel. According to Tourism Research Australia (TRA), more than 8 Million overseas trips were made by Australians in year 2015, while around 600 trips were carried out domestically. Many of the Australians are working travellers and travel bloggers, who enjoy obvious benefits of doing so. They get to enjoy their life while also fulfilling their professional responsibilities.
If you want to go hassle-free, then it is mandatory to arrange your travel gear before-hand. I am giving some useful digital hacks for fellow travellers and travel bloggers who are new into it.
Digital Hacks While You Work and Travel
- Travel Laptop
Travellers need to carry their laptops while they are travelling and working. For your laptop to survive the trip, it needs to be strong, lightweight and powerful. It should have a bigger battery life too if in case you’re a fan of tracking places and roaming around in unknown areas. As per traveller’s feedback, ASUS, Dell and Lenovo have good models for this purpose.
- Global Wi-Fi Services
There are several companies which allow their users to access premium Wi-Fi service from anywhere in the globe. These services have planted their own Wi-Fi hotspots, in malls, cafes and other such places, allowing users to log into and use these services at any time they want. There are many such brands some famous includes SkyRoam, XComGlobal and upcoming device Keezel.
- Global Sim Card
Working travellers do need to travel outside of the continent for a while. To save yourselves from any hassles and to keep your communications going, it’s always helpful to keep a global sim card available with you, through which you can not only communicate globally but also access 3G/4G internet service. Some famous names include WorldSim, OneSimCard, GoSim and SimCardGlobal.
- A VPN Connection
While travelling down the road, travellers at work need to connect with a public Wi-Fi network to access the internet. Problem is that public Wi-Fi networks are never safe. You never know if that network is being managed by a cyber criminal for monitoring your online communications or hacking into them without you even knowing about it.
It is absolutely necessary in such case to subscribe to a VPN service. VPNs encrypt your network and save you from all kinds of online threats. In my case, I prefer using PureVPN because of its speed and encryption features.
- Cloud Storage
Cloud Storage is perfect solution for travel bloggers and professionals who are travelling while working. It makes your work easy and convenient and you don’t have to look up for different files, transfer or email them. You can just share it with your colleagues or anyone with just a link. Furthermore, it is sync with all your devices including your laptop, mobile, office pc etc. The only drawback for cloud storage service is that you need an active internet connection to access it.
I prefer using Google Drive for the matter because of its reliability and excellent service. I can access the files any time I want either from my travel laptop, my phone, or from any web browser.
- Memory Storage
In case of internet unavailability or a bad connection, it will take too long to load files on cloud. In such scenarios, it is recommended to keep a portable 1 TB hard drive. This keeps the data safe and readily available back up, in case the travel laptop or phone crashes while travelling.
- Power Bank
In many situations, you won’t find any electricity to charge your laptop and your phone. Such situations also arise while you’re tracking and exploring new places, miles away from towns and cities. It is absolutely necessary to carry a powerful power bank with you so you can charge your devices anytime you want.
- Anti-Theft / Location Tracking Software
Google has made it easier for working travellers to track and control their Android devices in case they lose them or they are stolen. All you need to do is to access the Android Device Manager app either on your PC or your cell phone and enter your Google ID and credentials. Google will instantly update you on the device’s location, considering that it is connected to the internet. It also gives you the option to ring your device in case if it is near, or to delete your data if there’s no hope of finding it.
There are some similar apps, such as PreyProject, which allows users to track the location of their devices, set off an alarm, view its camera, watch what the user is doing, erase data or lock the device completely with a password.
The above digital hacks will help you a lot while you are travelling officially and it will be beneficial for long-term if you are travel blogger. You should now have most of everything to help you out while you work and travel.
