What happens if you walk into a police station brandishing a knife? In many countries you would be pepper-sprayed, Tasered, wrestled to the floor, arrested or even shot – but something much gentler has happened in Thailand, impressing and amazing people around the world.

In CCTV footage, said to have been filmed inside the main entrance to Huay Kwang Police Station in Bangkok, a man walks through the door holding a knife in front of him – and instead of being shot ends up being hugged.

A police officer talks to the man, remaining very relaxed throughout. The policeman, who is much bigger than the man with the knife, never over-reacts. The man walks towards the policeman, knife outstretched, but then hands the knife to the policeman.

The policeman walks towards the man with his arms outstretched. He warmly embraces the man and pats him on the back and they hug each other.

According to a report on Nine News, the police officer is named Anirut Malee and the man with the knife is a former musician, who is now employed as a security guard and was anxious and agitated after not being paid for three days.

Police officer Malee said he listened to the man’s story, “said I had a guitar to give him, and suggested we go out for a meal together.”

Result: nobody hurt and a good deed done. Reports say the man was cautioned but not charged.

The Huay Kwang district where the incident occurred is popular with tourists and has a fascinating night market.
