The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) tracks “short-term resident returns”, which counts Aussies returning from holiday – and the latest list shows Vietnam as the fastest-growing destination, while another perennial favourite destination was the only one to register a decline.

In trend terms, short-term resident returns from Australia during July 2017 (884,300 movements) increased 0.1% when compared with June 2017 (883,800 movements).

Currently, short-term resident returns are 6.5% higher than in July 2016.

When trend estimates for short-term resident returns for July 2016 and July 2017 were compared, the highest percentage increase was recorded for Vietnam (25.6%), followed by China (18.3%), and Italy (16.5%).

The only percentage decrease was recorded for Indonesia (down -4.7%). Travel to Indonesia is predominantly holiday traffic to Bali.

The following table from the ABS presents the top ten destination countries (based on original estimates) for short-term resident returns in July 2017.
