Virgin Australia today announced that from 15 August 2013 it will commence services between Melbourne and Hamilton Island with fares for sale from today.

It will be the first airline to offer Business Class on this route since 2004. The airline will operate its Boeing 737-800 aircraft that include 8 Business Class and 168 Economy Class seats. The aircraft features luxury leather seating in both Business, and Economy Class, as well as a Business Class menu designed by acclaimed chef Luke Mangan.

Virgin Australia Chief Commercial Officer, Judith Crompton said, “Melbourne to Hamilton Island has been a monopoly route for many years and we are very pleased to be bringing competition to the market from today. “Hamilton Island remains a very popular holiday destination for Australians.

We continue to review customer demand and the local community and tourism operators have told us that a direct service to Melbourne would be beneficial in bringing more choice to those flying in and out of this popular destination. We already fly direct from Brisbane and Sydney and are delighted to now offer leisure travellers a direct service from Melbourne.”

Travellers will be able to earn Points when flying on this new route with Virgin Australia’s award-winning loyalty program, Velocity Frequent Flyer1. Hamilton Island is also a partner of the Velocity Frequent Flyer Program. Velocity members can earn 3 Points for every dollar spent on accommodation with eligible hotels when booking directly with Hamilton Island Holidays2.

Virgin Australia will be offering great value fares from as little as $185 one-way3.

From 15 August 2013 flights will depart Melbourne at 8:30am on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, arriving into Hamilton Island at 11:30am. The return flight departs Hamilton Island at midday on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday arriving into Melbourne at 3:00pm4. During off-peak months (between February and June), services will only operate on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
