Virgin Australia Statement

February 14, 2014 Corporate No Comments Email Email

Virgin Australia has no issue with the Government repealing the Qantas Sale Act.

What Australia does not need is the Government giving Qantas a significant advantage through financial assistance, such as a taxpayer guarantee. This would be to the detriment of the entire industry, including the smaller regional carriers. Any such guarantee should be given to all players.

Qantas has significant advantages, including being the dominant player in the market and receiving the majority of Federal Government travel spend. They are an airline that has multiple times our assets and cash reserves, a superior credit rating and a substantially larger fleet of aircraft.

Qantas are in their current financial position because of their loss-making strategy of maintaining 65% of the domestic aviation market at all costs. We believe this is at the detriment of the entire industry. Any form of government assistance to Qantas is a means to enabling them to reinstate their monopoly.

Qantas enjoyed a virtual monopoly in the Corporate, Government and Regional market segments for many years until Virgin Australia stepped up a few years ago, bringing strong competition to all segments of the Australian market, with better value fares and superior service.

We hope to see this continue for the benefit of all Australians.
