George Town, Penang featured on CNN Travel

CNN Travel has recently published an article telling readers why now is the best time to visit Penang. Covering some programs from George Town Festival and also the Penang Durian Festival, the article also mentioned of George Town’s status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the city’s richness in culture, history, diversity and delicious street food. One of the highlights of the article includes the Theatre of Ships, a bamboo sculpture built by Indonesian artist, Joko Dwi Avianto and situated at Esplanade between the Penang Town Hall and the city hall.

The Obscura Photography Festival is also highlighted here together with ‘Sutra’, a theatrical dance work “inspired by and starring the famed Buddhist Shaolin monks”. Sutra features 17 monks from the original Shaolin Temple in China and includes a live orchestra who will perform a new score for piano, percussion and strings by Polish composer, Szymon Brzóska.

101 Lost Kittens : Switch Their Lives

Date: 23rd – 29th June 2013

Venue: George Town

Three animal lovers, Malaysian artists Louise Low and Tang Yeok Khang, and Thai artist Natthapon Muangkliang are teaming up to turn of the historic buildings in Penang into art canvases. The project is entitled “101 Lost Kittens” which aims to improve the treatment of stray cats and dogs. There is a total of 11 murals and sculptures all over George Town.

 The Mural Hunting Game:

1)   Download the Muzzy App from The App Store or Google Play. Select the 9 frame Photobox for the contest

2)   Head to George Town, where all the 11 mural paintings are scattered (as illustrated on the map). You will need to snap 8 photos of the mural and 1 sculpture

KBJ Ratu Kebaya 2013

Date: Auditions 22nd& 23rd June Finals: 30th June 2013

Venue: Kompleks Bukit Jambul

For the fourth consecutive time, Kompleks Bukit Jambul is organizing the Ratu Kebaya contest. The contest aims to promote the Kebaya as part of Malaysia’s cultural heritage.The participation is open to all nationalities.

KBJ RATU KEBAYA 2013 will kick off with Auditions on the 22nd& 23rd June 2013 scheduled to start from 5.30pm.

OBSCURA Festival is an international photography festival that features Asian stories through Asian photographers. It aims to showcase the best of Asian photography to the world, and also bring the finest photographic works from around the globe to the Asian audience.

Intriguing Instruments

 Date: 29th June 2013

Time: 6.30pm – 11pm

Venue: End of Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling (into Lebuh Cannon)

Have you ever seen or heardthe ranatsasando or sompoton? Musical instruments made from bamboo and wood represent the earliest instruments in Southeast Asia as the materials can easily be found in the tropical forests of the region. These instruments were the telephones of the past and often used for courting, calling people to prayer, scaring away insects, healing the sick and entertainment.

Six groups will captivate us with their fascinating forms of bamboo and wooden jaw’s harps, flutes, shawms, mouth organs, tube zithers, xylophones, clappers, strings and percussion instruments from Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. The audience is invited to try out the instruments and interact with the performers during breaks.
