To meet the growing demand of the international market, Visit Santa Cruz County has released a new video which promotes the region and the accessibility of reaching California’s quintessential beach town for sun-seekers abroad. Designed with long-haul travelers in mind, the video – San José to Santa Cruz and the Monterey Bay – illustrates the ease of flying into Mineta-San José International Airport (SJC), experiencing San José and Silicon Valley, and visiting nearby Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties. Visit Santa Cruz County is collaborating with Team San José, and the Monterey County CVB to showcase the region to international visitors by establishing a direct connection to key target markets. Santa Cruz is an easy 30-minute drive from SJC.

The video begins at San José International Airport, and shows key points in each destination, including San Pedro Market, the Tech Museum of Innovation, and SAP Center in San José. Highway 17 – the main route connecting SJC and Silicon Valley with the coast – and the Santa Cruz Mountains, the Santa Cruz coastline, wineries, the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum, Natural Bridges State Beach, Capitola Village, and more scenic points of interest in Santa Cruz County are shown. And Cannery Row, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and golfing are featured in Monterey County.

“These marketing efforts position San José, Santa Cruz County, and Monterey County into a cohesive region, with each destination offering a unique experience for foreign visitors,” said Maggie Ivy, CEO and Executive Vice President of Visit Santa Cruz County. “We’re packaging together San José’s tech culture, shopping, and museums, with the beaches and redwoods in Santa Cruz County, and the wineries and the iconic drive down Highway 1 to Monterey County.”

In the past two years, the number of airlines offering international service at SJC has grown from three to nine. Last year alone, four new international routes were launched by British Airways, Lufthansa, Air China, and Air Canada out of SJC. In May 2016, British Airways launched the first regularly scheduled nonstop transatlantic service from London to San José. Utilizing the newest aircraft in its fleet, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, the nonstop service London Heathrow International Airport to SJC brings in a potential 216 passengers from the UK daily. The UK is one of the largest inbound overseas markets for travel to California and has been identified as the primary international market for San José and the Monterey Bay region.

In July 2016, Lufthansa became the first European carrier to offer nonstop flights between SJC and Frankfurt International Airport. Lufthansa offers five weekly flights on the Frankfurt-Silicon Valley route on the Airbus A340- 300 which can seat up to 298 passengers. Air China began nonstop service three times a week between San José and Shanghai in September 2016. San José became Air China’s tenth gateway in North America and its first destination with direct connections to Shanghai from the Silicon Valley. Shanghai is one of the top five requested international destinations by Silicon Valley travelers. Finally, Air Canada launched nonstop service twice a day between SJC and Vancouver International Airport in 2016.

To supplement these marketing and promotional efforts, ongoing international media and trade familiarization tours to San José and the Monterey Bay also take place on a regular basis, to coincide with the promotion of new routes. British Airways, Norwegian Air, and Lufthansa Airlines all partnered to bring in fam tours in 2016.
