Hari Raya Aidil Adha is celebrated by Muslims all over the world on the 10th of Zulhijjah (the last month of the Islamic calendar) every year, to mark the end of the hajj pilgrimage. Every year millions of Muslims journey to the holy land of Mecca to perform the hajj, and this is one of basic tenets of Islam. This year, the date falls on the 15 of October in the Roman Calendar.

In Malaysia, Aidil-Adha is commonly known as Hari Raya Haji or Hari Raya Korban. The word “Korban” means sacrifice and this is significant to the celebration as it also commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (PBUH) to sacrifice his son Prophet Ismail (PBUH)as an act of obedience to Allah S.W.T.

Experience authentic Indonesian Culture at the Indonesian Food, Handicraft and Cultural Festival 2013, on the 19 and 20 October. The festival is organized by the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia with the support of Penang State Tourism.

The festival aims to promote the food , handicrafts and culture  of Indonesia to Penangites and tourists alike. On top of that, it hopes to foster an ongoing friendship between Indonesia and Penang.

nine_emperor_ghostNine Emperor Gods Festival Celebration in Penang

The Nine Emperor Gods Festival is an annual Taoist celebration held from the first day to the ninth day of the lunar month. Celebrate mainly in Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia, the festival ushers the nine sons of Tou Mu, Goddess of the North Star who is believed to control the books of life and death.

For nine days, devotees will observe vegetarian diet to cleanse their body and soul.

One can find a variety of vegetarian stalls along the roads and lanes around Penang with delicious and creative vegetarian cuisines.  Some of the stalls don yellow cloth or signage indicating that they serve vegetarian food.

navarathriNavarathri Festival 2013

Date: 5-13 October 2013

 Similar to the famous Chinese Nine Emperor Gods Festival, the Navratri Festival is a Hindu religious festival that takes place during the first nine days of the seventh month in the Hindu calendar. During these nine days, devotees pray to the Hindu goddesses, Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati in hopes of power, wealth and knowledge. A chariot procession also takes place on the final day of the festival.

The first three days are devoted to Durga, the goddess of destruction, who devotees pray to for strength and power. On the first night, she is believed to be cleansing the Earth for the celebration and teenagers are often encouraged to return home early lest they get in her way. Alters honouring Durga are erected in Hindu temples, with her idol often seen as riding a lion.

Honda_CityPenang Bridge International Marathon announces HONDA CITY as Grand Lucky Draw Prize

Good news for Penang Bridge marathoners! The Penang Bridge International Marathon (PBIM) committee has recently announced that they will be giving away a brand new HONDA CITY as its only lucky draw prize this year. During the last two years, the grand lucky draw prize was a Proton Saga 1.3.
