Penang chosen as filming location for UK series “Indian Summers

unnamed (13)From New Productions Ltd (UK) and Masterpiece (US), the co-producers of International series Downtown AbbeyIndian Summers is a major ten-part series about the final years of British colonial rule in India. New Productions Ltd also collaborated with local production company, Biscuit Films Sdn Bhd for the filming of this series. Set between the foothills of the Himalayas and tea plantations of Northern India, it tells the story of the decline of the British Empire and the birth ofmodern India, seen through both British and Indian eyes.

It is the first international television production to be filmed entirely in Penang. After an extensive global search was carried out for suitable locations, including the Indian sub-continent and the Far East, Penang was chosen for its beautifully preserved heritage sites and culture.

Local Government Fee imposed on hotels in Penang

unnamed (14)Effective from 1 June 2014, a “Local Government Fee” will be imposed on all hotel guests in Penang and the rates vary according to the type of hotel the guest is staying in. RM3.00 will be charged per room per night for 4-star and 5-star hotels and RM2.00 will be charged per room per night for 3-star hotels and below including all dormitories, budget hotels, hostels and guest houses.

The Local Government Fee will be imposed on all hotel guests who are staying from 1 June 2014 onwards regardless of whether the bookings were made prior to the enforcement date.
