Lonely Planet names Penang as World’s Number #1 Spot for Foodies in 2014

The largest travel guide book publisher in the world, Lonely Planet, has listed Penang as World’s Number #1 culinary hotspot in the world for 2014.

Penang is the only city from Asia in this list of must-visit places for foodies The list also featured other culinary destinations such as Victoria (Australia), North-West Spain, Southern USA, Lake District (UK), Puglia (Italy), Georgia, and Oaxaca (Mexico)

People’s Birthday/ 7th Day of Lunar New Year

The 7th day of Lunar New Year is called “Renri” , which literally translates to “Human Day”. In Chinese customs, it is believed to be the day that all human beings were created.

Hokkien New Year 2014 (Thni Kong Seh)
Date: 8 January 2014
Time: 7.00pm to 12 midnight
Venue: Chew Jetty / Hillway Road (Penang Hill), Ayer Itam

Midnight on the ninth day of Chinese New Year, throngs of Hokkien-Chinese devotees will be seen visiting the Jade Emperor God (Thni Kong) temples at Air Itam and Chew Jetty to celebrate Hokkien New Year with offerings of food and prayers for a smooth and prosperous year ahead. During this time, the temples are usually decorated festively with colourful lights and bright lanterns, and a large altar dedicated to the Jade Emperor.

Penang featured on Hong Kong’s TVB Drama “Outbound Love”

Penang’s attractions, sights and sounds are now immortalized on TVB’s 22-episode drama series, “Outbound Love”.

Premiered on 20 January 2014, the series revolves around a travel agent from Hong Kong, Law Sik Sik (Aimee Chan) who visits Penang and met a the charming Luk Kung Zi (Ruco Chan) However, Sik Sik was already engaged to Ching Zin Bok (Matt Yeung).

Royal Thai Navy’s Visit to Penang

Date: 10 February 2014

Time: 10am-12pm, 1pm-3pm

Venue: HTMS Kraburi, Swettenham Pier

Following the Royal Thai Navy cadet training unit’s naval exercise on international seas, the Royal Thai Navy, consisting of three navy ships; the HTMS Kraburi, HTMS Narathiwat and HTMS Saiburi, will be anchoring at the Swettenham Pier, Penang from the 7th to 12th February 2014.
